A high-speed car accident in Florida has left the teenage son of wrestling star Hulk Hogan seriously injured and a companion in critical condition late Sunday, police said.

TV footage shows a person injured in Nick Hogan's car crash being treated in an ambulance.

Nick Bollea, 17, was the driver of a Toyota Supra that went out of control while driving at a "high rate of speed" about 7:30 p.m. Sunday, said Wayne Shelor, a spokesman for the Clearwater police in Clearwater, Florida.

The car "inexplicably left the roadway," jumped across a raised median and slammed into a palm tree just east of downtown, Shelor said.

"It destroyed the car," he said.

Firefighters had to extract Bollea and his passenger, whose identity was not immediately released, from the wreckage using the jaws of life. Both were flown to a hospital in nearby St. Petersburg, Florida, Shelor said.

"They're both down there. Nick's father is down there," he said. Watch Hulk Hogan on the scene with the mangled car »

Hulk Hogan, one of the top professional wrestlers of the 1980s and 1990s, is now featured in the VH1 reality show "Hogan Knows Best." His son, wife Linda and daughter Brooke regularly appear on the show.

One episode documented the son's interest in a type of high-speed car racing known as "drifting."

Shelor said there was no evidence of drag racing or "drifting" in Sunday's wreck.

Police said Bollea -- known to viewers as "Nick Hogan" -- was not as seriously hurt as his passenger, who was listed as critical.

Shelor said the wreck forced police to shut down mile-long Court Street, the main east-west road through central Clearwater, as they investigated the accident.

"I will have this road closed for a minimum of four hours," he said. "It was a spectacular wreck."

My prayers with the family and friends. I hope they make it, tho it doesnt look good.

My prayers go out to the families and for a full recovery for everyone involved.

That being said:

Do we blame this on "the priviledged set" or simply the actions of teenagers who think they're invincible? Remember, when we were that age, we all thought nothing could destroy us. We took risks. Some were dangerous and/or deadly. None were worth the dangers involved. Everyone's done as least one stupid stunt in their lives. Most survive. A few don't. It's a cruel numbers game, Russian Roulette with a weapon other than a gun. This story made headlines because of who was involved. But this kind of thing happens all over on a daily basis. Fast driving is glorified in everything from NASCAR to movies to jeans commercials. It's up to we as adults and/or parents to do our best to teach kids that actions have consequences.

As to my question:
This time, it's a case of teens being teens. Irresponsible teens. Let's just hope that they don't pay the ultimate price for a horribly bad decision.

I remember when I was ten feet tall and bulletproof, but that was a very long time ago. All kids go through that stage regardless of their station in life. Unfortunately some of them pay a very high price for it. I grew up in Montana where there was no daytime speed limit. Fortunately most of us survived the transgressions of our youth.

The front page story in my local paper today was of a local boy who is an outstanding baseball player and athlete who is in the hospital in Sioux Falls in a comatose condition after a skateboard accident. He has so much brain damage that he is not expected to live.

My prayers are with both families.
