It was a dismal dark and dank House, with threaded webs Knit brows, knotted cries in Her throat She wrote messages in the dust Wrote love notes on dated newspapers She dated alone She had made her bed, and Not made it since, She had taken a lover Under her bed Where mice warmed her feet This figure touched her Side by side, lay there Hand and hand Arm and arm Leg and leg A single ball of twine She and her Boogie Man imagined Stars in the springs of her exposed Mattress She made love to a man She could not identify by sight Only by sound and by scent He put her nightmares to rest When he lulled her to sleep |
