Here is an excerpt from a story in the Dallas Morning News: More than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation became law, slaves in Texas were finally declared free on June 19, 1865, when Union Army Maj. Gen. Gordon Granger stood on the porch of a Galveston home and read General Orders No. 3.
That act was the beginning of annual celebrations and recognitions that became known as Juneteenth, an observance that has spread to 41 other states and the District of Columbia. The date’s popularity is growing, with some support in Congress for making Juneteenth a National Day of Observance, similar to Flag Day. IMHO, the complete eradication of slavery in the USA is something worthy of an annual celebration.

The Juneteenth Celebration is an event that celebrates the end of American slavery and the beginning of African American Independence. Juneteenth has come to symbolize for many African-Americans what the fourth of July symbolizes for all Americans; Freedom. It serves as a historical milestone reminding all Americans of the triumph of the human spirit over the institution of slavery. Juneteenth honors those ancestors who endured the hopeless grief and crimes involved with slavery, as well as reflecting pride in the great legacies of courage, resistance, and perseverance embodied in those who helped to abolish American slavery.
