DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) – Calvin Carter lives in South Dallas’ Sunny Acres neighborhood, an area that has worked hard to keep crime out but it has been a struggle.

Last July Dallas Police suited up in riot gear and tried to control an angry mob right behind Carter’s home.

Officers were called to the area for what turned out to be a setup between rivalry gangs over drug turf.

It ended with one man being fatally shot by a Dallas officer.

But a new program is getting Carter’s attention.
The Armed Citizen Project is raising money to give free guns to residents living in high-crime areas and to single women — so they can defend themselves against criminals.

Based in Houston– the group now wants to expand to Dallas.

“It sounds good but you have to be careful,” said Carter.

“It’ s good to be able to have weapons in case something happens to you or your family when you’re not there, that weapon could save them.”

In order to get a free gun you have to pass a background check and complete a safety training course.

You also have to have lived at your current address for at least a year.

The group’s gun of choice is a single shot shotgun.

Gun expert Tom Mannewitz with Target Masters in Garland told CBS11′s Sharrie Williams that the group may have chosen the single-shot shotgun because its one of the least expensive weapons to purchase.

But Mannewitz says it’s also the most effective weapon protecting you and your home.

“With a handgun the projectile is very slender so it’s easier to miss your target,” explained Mannewitz. ” With a shotgun, even at distances of 12 feet which is average distance across the room, you have a pattern of 6 inches in diameter so even if you’re off, you’re still likely to have something in the target.”

The free gun program is controversial — and drawing criticism.

“That appalls me completely,” said Lynne Weber. “I’m against having guns in our society. I want gun control. I think doing that would not empower women but endanger them and everyone around them.”

Gun sales have spiked nationwide in the past months as the debate over gun control has been front center after shootings in Newtown, Connecticut killed 20 children and seven adults.

But only time will tell if this free gun program will resonate with residents living in North Texas.

The first background check should be done on Barry or whatever his name is.

And, by a Conservative.

Happy Easter! Maryland Democrats Ram Through Sweeping Gun Control over Holiday Weekend

While many Americans were paying attention to things other than politics on Good Friday, Maryland's Democrat delegates were ramming through Gov. Martin O'Malley's gun grabbing legislation S.B. 281.

This measure is an "assault weapons" ban which is so draconian that it punishes law-abiding gun owners whose guns are stolen from their homes. In this way, the legislation not only bars the procurement of new "assault weapons" but also turns ownership of weapons acquired before the ban into a risky proposition.

Republican delegate Mike Smigiel offered an amendment that would have changed the language in S.B. 281 so as to protect gun owners by punishing criminals who steal guns instead, but Democrats mounted a push keep Smigiel's amendment from passing.

Former Secret Service Agent and 2012 candidate for U.S. Senate in Maryland Daniel Bongino spoke to Breitbart News and described the antics behind the defeat of Smigiel's amendment:

Political cowards in the Maryland legislature scheduled a gun hearing on Good Friday to avoid media attention after a massive public outcry against this overreaching legislative firearm grab. Then...they broke their own parliamentary procedures in order to punish legal firearm owners and protect criminals.

Republican delegate Mike Smigiel introduced a common-sense amendment to Gov. O'Malley's S.B. 281--an amendment that would have punished criminals who steal guns from the homes of their owners. The original bill only punished the firearm owner for having his or her home broken into, but contained no punishment for the actual criminal. Smigiel's amendment passed on a proper committee vote. But the committee Chair then took the unprecedented step of ordering a new vote. The Chair was then able to use bullying tactics to force two Democrats to change their votes which, in turn, killed the amendment.

The day before the vote on S.B. 281 took place, the NRA used similar language in warning of Gov. O'Malley's "deceptive tactics and political bullying."

URGENT: The UN Just Passed Global Gun Control Treaty

The UN just passed an “international” arms control treaty with the express purpose of controlling who can own guns. The general claim is that this is only about stopping criminals and terrorists from getting guns, but it’s unavoidable that the only way to “see” who owns what guns is to regulate law abiding citizens, create mandatory registration, and violate Second Amendment rights.

A former version of the treaty was reviewed by world-famous constitutional and international law expert Dr. Michael Farris, which we published here. Dr. Farris is a constitutional lawyer, has argued before the US Supreme Court, and has an LLM in international law from the University of London. He explains in simple terms: “[The treaty] is aimed not only at arms dealers—it is aimed at every “end user” of firearms. Yes, that means gun owners like you and me.”

Please note that this is a developing story, so we’ll be editing this page and article continuously as we learn more about the specific impacts of what was actually signed. Please check back for updates.

The Treaty is NOT Just For “Criminals”

The claim, given by the UN itself, is that the treaty is only for criminals and won’t violate the rights of the law abiding. This, of course, is a pure lie. There’s no way to magically “stop criminals” from getting guns without regulating people like us with registration.

Remember, the US is currently giving F-16s to the Muslim Brotherhood. We’ve spent decades arming terror cells for “diplomacy” reasons. They don’t care about disarming these people. The purpose of this treaty is simple: consolidate power.

In the future, if we have to choose between following an illegal treaty and following the constitution, I know exactly which I’ll follow.
