Traumer...interesting reading you left.. kartagane...knew there had to be more watching.... If you haven't seen the old Hollywood film The Vikings with Kirk Douglas and Tony Curtis(totally miscast), you may enjoy it. The TV series has all the place names right, but the movie didn't... Still, it is a good film and worth renting or downloading. Not many Viking movies out there. Hollywood canceled one about the Vikings in the area of the Great Lakes in the 13th century; too controversial; same with Prince Madoc and the Welsh and Vikings landed in Mobile and went up the Mississippi. Their burial sites were discovered in Tennessee I believe, complete with swords and shields...long way from home...I love good historic movies and series. |

Traumer....I didn't know I liked this period til 'Vikings'.......thankyou for the information, appreciate it....... KiK...you may just like it! I love the entire "Viking Age" which to me lasted until the Muslim wars of attrition on Constantinople, because many 'Vikings', Swedish, Norwegian, Dutch and the Rus tribes that settled many parts of Russia starting in the 8th century and founded their kingdom in what became the Ukraine, sailed on to the end on Europe at Constantinople. There they became the elite Varangian Guard of the Roman Emperors,(10th to 14th cent.) and defended it against all who attacked it. Other Vikings joined the military orders of the Church, especially those known by the popular name of the Teutonic Knights and others who fought in all the battles of the Crusades, especially Acre and Jerusalem. They were the flower of the Northmen, aka, the 'Normans'...how can anyone not like or appreciate the Vikings! (I actually met one Palestinian family descended directly from a noble Norman Knight and through the centuries had passed down his ancient sword that he had inherited from his great Grandfather a Viking warrior from Norway...incredible!) Did you see the film, The Thirteenth Warrior with Antonio Banderas" That fell into the Viking category. The original book, Eaters Of The Dead was great! |

Yesterday the new channel H2,(History 2) had an all day session of the series Ancient Aliens and that had an hour segment on the ancient Gods of the Vikings with descriptions of the weapons that many were known for using, with a good analysis of their possible technological aspects compared to weapons used by many other 'Gods' around the world.
It mouth watering to say the least. Also the entire mythology of Valhalla and the nine other worlds that the Vikings believed in along with a 'rainbow bridge' connecting earth to Asgard, Odin's home-world. Fascinating, to say the least. Did anyone see it?? |
