Whew..... another dooms day threat come and gone...

A near-Earth asteroid – called 2012 DA14 by astronomers – swept safely past Earth today (February 15, 2013).

At its closest to us, it was within the orbit of the moon (which averages about a quarter million miles away), and closer than some high-orbiting communications satellites – about 17,200 miles (27,680 kilometers) away. The asteroid sped harmlessly past, with its closest approach today at 1925 UTC (1:25 p.m. CST). Many online viewing sessions are still scheduled for later today, as darkness falls in various parts of the world.

However,

Moscow (CNN) -- A meteor streaked through the skies above Russia's Urals region Friday morning before exploding with a flash and boom that shattered glass in buildings and left about 1,000 people hurt, authorities said.

Described by NASA as a "tiny asteroid," the meteor's explosion created a blast in central Russia equivalent to 300,000 tons of TNT, the space agency's officials said Friday, adding that the incident was a once-in-100-years event.

The injured included more than 200 children. Most of those hurt are in the Chelyabinsk region, though the vast majority of injuries are not thought to be serious.

There is a 100% chance that a big one is headed this way. It is just a matter of when.

I bet those people in Russia about crapped their pants when that meteor flew by and blew out a bunch of windows in over 3000 buildings. Especially if they knew about the asteroid that was supposed to come so close.

Another object was caught on video in California falling to the earth. It didn't seem to do any damage. It was on tonights news.

But while the Russian meteor injured more than 1,000 people after exploding hours earlier, the fireball in California was not as noteworthy, Mike Hankey, operations manager for the American Meteor Society, told the AP.

"Fireballs happen every single night, all around the world," he said.

YouTube user caiden915x posted a video of the shooting star, above, after spotting it while on the road: "We see a bright blue shooting star (meteor) fly across towards the Peninsula. Looked amazing in person!"

Damn straight! Being a collector, I hope fragments turn up on the meteorite market soon.

I wish I knew how to ID meteorites. I'd bet there are many scattered here in the desert.

One of the ways is to just use a metal detector. Many of them are iron based.

Only eight and they're fairly small, my largest is app. 2 inches long. I also collect fossils, but I don't have a lot of those either, it's hard to find affordable specimens that haven't been damaged by hammers.

Rocks and minerals are cool as well.

there was one in Cuba the same day also...

Cuba apparently experienced a phenomenon similar to the meteorite that detonated over Russia this week, island media reported, with startled residents describing a bright light in the sky and a loud explosion that shook windows and walls.

There were no reports of any injuries or damage such as those caused by the Russia meteorite, which sent out shockwaves that hurt some 1,200 people and shattered countless windows.

In a video from a state TV newscast posted on the website CubaSi late Friday, unidentified residents of the central city of Rodas, near Cienfuegos, said the explosion was impressive.

"On Tuesday we left home to fish around five in the afternoon, and around 8:00 we saw a light in the heavens and then a big ball of fire, bigger than the sun," one local man said in the video.

"My home shook completely," said a woman. "I had never heard such a strange thing."

Marcos Rodriguez, whom the video identified as a specialist in anthropology, said all signs point to a meteorite.

A reporter said a similar phenomenon was observed in 1994 elsewhere in Cienfuegos province.

The video said Cuban authorities were looking for any fragments that may have fallen to the earth.

California Fireball

Meanwhile, a science institute in Northern California says it has received numerous reports of a bright streak of light over the San Francisco Bay area.

The Chabot Space and Science Center in Oakland received calls describing what appeared to be a fireball flying west Friday night, but it's not clear what the object was.

Astronomer Gerald McKeegan tells KGO-TV that the centre's large telescopes did not pick up the object during a stargazing event.

Experts say smaller meteorites hit Earth five to 10 times a year but large meteors such as the one in Russia are rarer.

I know! It makes you wonder if these idiots can breathe without instructions.

This guy has to be a favourite for a medal in the Stupid Olympics:

DA14 is the closest Asteroid yet to planet Earth and knowing how evil and morally corrupt the American government is, (it's economy is up **** creek- $211 trillion in debt) it wouldn't surprise me if the American government deliberately tried to deflect the asteroid onto their arch enemy Russia. How else can you explain the situation in Russia, a day before the Asteroid is supposed to pass. Now you have the Guardian reporting that the Russians intercepted an inbound object and the Russians themselves are claiming it was an new American weapon.

He knows, the Guardian told him so.
