Is divorce a sin?
Mark 10:11-12
He told them,"Whoever divorces his wife and marries someone else commits adultery against her. And if a women divorces her husband and marries someone else, she commits adultery".

So does that mean if u divorce ur husband or wife, and then abstain from any sexual activity for the rest of ur life, u hav not sinned?

Does anyone have any thoughts? Was reading the bible and yeah it got me thinking.

This person had a similar question.

Mark 10
2 And the Pharisees came to him, and asked him, Is it lawful for a man to put away his wife? tempting him.

And Jesus' response to your question would be

7 For this cause shall a man leave his father and mother, and cleave to his wife;

8 And they twain shall be one flesh: so then they are no more twain, but one flesh.

9 What therefore God hath joined together, let not man put asunder.

In Matthew 5:32, Jesus says, "I say to you that everyone who divorces his wife, except on the ground of sexual immorality, makes her commit adultery, and whoever marries a divorced woman commits adultery."(ESV)

In Matthew 19:9, Jesus says, "I say to you: whoever divorces his wife, except for sexual immorality, and marries another, commits adultery."(ESV)

That is to say that anybody putting away his wife or husband for any other reason apart from this is to remain single? Simplify please.

You mean the Law Office of Dewey, Shaftem, and Howe would be out of Business?

Forcing incompatible People to stay together, creates Misery, which is exploited by the Religionists!
Someone suffering is much easier led than someone full of Joy!
They have no need to be led by any Religious Leader!
So,more miserable People, more Sheep for those Leaders!

I quoted Matthew 5:32 and Matthew 19:9 in order to clarify the quote from Mark 10. It is a mistake to quote from Mark 10 without also quoting from Matthew 5:32 and Matthew 19:9. In those verses in Matthew, Jesus says that a divorce is not a sin if the divorce is a response to sexual immorality.

Being that this thread is in the "General Religion" forum, I do not assume that everyone reading this thread conforms to the teachings of Jesus. Those people who do conform to the teachings of Jesus should know everything that he said about divorce.

I will leave it to you to interpret what Jesus says in Matthew because I expect you to be intelligent enough to do so.

Personally, I did not date anyone after my ex-wife and I got a divorce until she had sexual intercourse with someone other than me. I had left open the door for reconciliation, and she slammed the door shut with her sexual behavior.

In case you are wondering, my marriage to my ex-wife ended because I was a battered husband and because she placed me in legal danger. I still have the 1.5 inch/4 cm. scar that she put on my left arm. Her next husband wasn't so lucky. She shot him.

If we are to be factual, you will agree with me that if all religious people are to live by this bible standard in question, they are gonna be out of job.
As for the incompactibility stuff, humans are not programmes thus we are not supposed to react harshly to some attitudes that could be amended.

Nobody is "forcing" anyone to stay together. They took vows at the marriage, for BETTER or for WORSE. They should have thought through getting married better. A kind of a lay in the bed that you make sort of thing.

Exactly, that is because there is no marriage to be "divorced" from. Once the one cheats on the other or any other form of sexual immorality in the marriage, there is no longer a marriage. Regardless if there is some piece of paper legally saying they are married. They broke their vows, thus ended the marriage.

Just because people get married does not mean they have been bought together by god.

It means they decided to get married, hopefully with the best of intentions. That is all.

It should be a sin for people who can't stand
each other (anymore) to be quilted into staying married.

God guides us all together, for one reason or other. This isn't to say he "forces" us to be here or there to meet this or that person. This includes friends or whatever.

And in the context of what's being said in this verse. Yes God brought them together. God is love. Where God is not, so neither is love. Where God is, there is love. So yes, when the two fall in love, they have been brought together by God through love.

And even more specific, when two are "married". They are joined together to be as one. That is the entire purpose of marriage, they are no longer two, but are now one. So that's why it says let no man bring apart what God has joined together.

Marriage is more then that chinsy little piece of paper people call a marriage license. That piece of paper means absolutely nothing to God. That piece of paper, only is important for our society.

You think a thousand years ago, they wrote up marriage license and or marriage certificates.
