Actually half of the are not full aircraft carriers but are for helicopters and transport.

Aircraft carriers are a display of US might. I have seen numerous interviews where when a crisis happens the first thing a sitting President will ask is what carrier do we have in the area. They are a good deterrent as well. Look what just happened with China and Japan and the US sending two carriers into the area and China quietly backed down.

We need 20-30 more of them.

China is now the only country in the world that has anti-aircraft carrier missiles.

Unless the gatlin guns, or whatever, to shoot down incoming missiles is working we are not in a good position right now.

Harrier jets require less mass, the smaller carriers are more mobile. LPTs, LSH's, and I believe it LOV's are your chopper carriers (not shown), as well as destroyers, battle cruisers, subs, and a dozen other capable ships, many nuclear, make up a supporting battle group.

For every one of those carriers there are 100 support ships or more, on an ocean that dominates 2/3 of the worlds surface. Any one of these carriers is capable of destroying a country or two by itself, in minutes, and with the long range capabilities and support from it's battle group, satelite surveilence, and a command center the Pentagon envies, sinking one of our aircraft carriers these days is practically an impossibility since nobody is stupid enough to try!

There is like a 200 mile net around these floating nations, and any act against one would be the last act of whoever tried!

People not having a clue about the military excuses only so much ignorance, the misinformation of the media is the bigger harm playing on that ignorance, beating the war drums, selling the myths and lies to keep people buying them!

We need more? Our 11 nuclear flattops could rule the world if their Captains went rogue. We only have one world to destroy, and DC is doing a pretty good job of it without the carriers doing anything but imposing the threats they are capable of!

How many nuclear submarines does the United States have?

The US has 17 Ohio-class nuclear ballistic missile submarines, each one with 2 dozen long range nuclear warheads, and the same amount or more short range cruise and tomahawk missles. They pose as much or more of a threat/deterent as the carriers these days, and are much harder to defend against.

The thought that ANY nation would directly attack us is insanity! We are more vulnerable (like Russia) to monetary defeat (which DC is rushing us towards) which would make the whole of our defenses useless if our money crashes!

And they are like shooting BB's or throwing rocks at a tank against the capabilities of our carriers and their massive support groups!
