Here is my choice Devinci! He isn't a one issue man, and his record is proven! He won as Governor in N Mexico, a Republican State, with 60% of the vote. He's not black, a woman, or even 100% Mexican, but I think more people should give him a read.

Iraq

The Iraq War is costing Americans $8 billion each month. By implementing my plan to de-authorize the war and withdraw ALL troops by the end of the year, we can start redirecting these funds toward what matters most for Americans: improving education, expanding access to quality health care, and addressing the REAL security threats like the Taliban, nuclear proliferation, and global warming.
Health Care

My health care plan uses new ways to expand proven sources of affordable coverage to all Americans. It guarantees that all Americans will have choices of high quality, affordable care by giving every American the choice to keep their current coverage or obtain coverage through an existing, well-established program. My plan can be paid for without raising taxes. When some do not have access to affordable care, all Americans end up paying the price.
Energy

We must “Act Boldly and Act Now” in order to make America a Clean Energy Nation like I made New Mexico a Clean Energy State. Consider this a call to action, for Congress, the energy industry, and the public. I am calling for a new American revolution – an energy and climate revolution.

Civil Liberties

As Congressman, Ambassador, Secretary and Governor of New Mexico, Bill Richardson has been a champion of civil rights, equality, freedom and the rule of law. As President, Bill Richardson will continue to fight for and protect the rights and freedoms that make America so great.

Environment

Throughout my career in public service, I have been fighting for conservation because I understand the importance of protecting our most valuable natural resources. I have been honored to be recognized as an Environmental Leader of the Year by the National Environmental Trust, the National Wildlife Federation, and Vanity Fair magazine for our work in New Mexico. As President, I will do even more to protect our environment, just like we did in New Mexico.

Economy

As Governor of New Mexico, I have overseen a growing and vibrant economy. Since my election in 2002, we’ve created over 80,000 new jobs -- many of them good paying jobs in high-tech, aerospace, film and other growth industries. We provided tax credits to companies that create jobs paying above the prevailing wage and also gave a tax holiday to start up high tech companies so that America can remain dominant in technology to keep our economy growing. I understand how important it is to achieve universal health coverage and improve our education system to ensure a strong economy and good jobs.

Education

Improving our schools has been central to my work turning around New Mexico. As Governor, I worked hard on behalf of teachers, investing in higher salaries and expanded benefits for those who have given our communities so much.

Immigration

I am committed to enforcing our borders and pushing for immigration reform. We need tough, effective border control and building a fence will not increase security; only more border patrol manpower will. I believe in realistic immigration reform that requires undocumented workers to earn their legal status through paying fines for illegally crossing the border, learning English, paying taxes, and obeying our laws.

Foreign Policy

This administration’s lack of realism has led us to a dangerous place. We need to take a different path. A path based on reality, not unilateralist illusions. A path that understands that the gravest dangers that threaten us today do not threaten only us – and that therefore to pursue our national interest and meet these challenges we must work with our friends, our enemies, and everyone in between. This is a path not of hard words, but of hard work. A path of moral strength, not pious judgments. A path of strong diplomacy, backed up by a strong military and strong alliances. This is the path of American leadership.

fanta...I gave Richardson a look at one time...but
"Richardson is all about AIPAC in no uncertain terms - protecting Israel at all costs, no discussion with Hamas or Hezbollah unless those groups denounce violence and the destruction of the Israeli state. Israel is our greatest partner in the region. No mention of Palestine or Palestinian desires. His foreign policy for Israel is simply to just walk back into the Middle East peace process that was abandoned after Clinton left office.

In regards to Iran & Iraq, my impressions are bit more favorable, but he's mouthing the same general promises of engagement with Middle East neighbors while promising full US withdrawal within one year. These promises are what focus polls are saying that a Dem candidate needs to say. It's not courageous leadership by any means.

If you're looking for international or innovative thinking in regards to Israel and Palestine, you're sure as **** coming out of the horse not going to find it in Bill Richardson's campaign.

candidates owned by AIPAC are off limits to me...

News: Richardson on the issues

By BYLINE MARK OSWALD | The New Mexican
May 3, 2007

Listening to U.S. Rep. Bill Richardson explain his position on gun control to a Santa Fe audience is like watching Fred Astaire dance. The guy is good.

Richardson, unlike many of his fellow Democrats, historically has voted against gun control. But when faced with President Clinton's 1994 crime bill an omnibus measure that included an assault weapons ban, along with a bunch of other things such as money for more police officers and prisons Richardson voted with the president.

Then, recently, Richardson voted for a stand-alone House bill to repeal the assault weapons ban.

When Richardson held one of his ``town hall'' meetings at the County Commission chambers Wednesday, gun control came up. Several people were there to urge him to oppose assault weapons.

In his response, the deft Richardson managed to defend his stance against gun control while hinting that he might side with the gun control supporters when the chips are down, at least when it comes to assault weapons.

Most of his constituents want legalized assault weapons, Richardson claimed. He also said he's talked to cops who say that under the Brady Act that calls for background checks for gun buyers, police have to spend more time on the background checks than catching crooks.

Remember, Richardson told the audience, liberal stronghold Santa Fe might be the biggest city (``by a small margin'') in his congressional district, but he also represents places such as Farmington, Clovis and Portales ``areas that don't share the same ideological proclivities (as Santa Fe) on issues like this.''

Richardson essentially told the Santa Feans that his recent vote to legalize assault weapons didn't mean much. The House's consideration of the measure was ``a political vote'' on a bill that's going nowhere, he said. ``There's not even a vote scheduled in the Senate,'' he said.

``I voted to repeal the ban because it's always been my view that occasionally a member of Congress, on an issue where he or she has some difficulty in justifying a vote, that I should respect the wishes of my constituents,'' Richardson said. ``In this case, the strong majority favor repealing the ban. That doesn't mean it's the right vote.

``And I'm not here to tell you it was an easy thing to do,'' he said. ``But I felt in that case, having voted for the ban (as part of the 1994 crime bill) and knowing that it was a vote that was not going anywhere, I took that vote.

``Sometimes you have to reflect your constituents,'' Richardson said.

He added, ``Perhaps if there was another vote, and it were a vote that basically was a significant vote, then I reserve the option of doing something different.''

Gun control advocates weren't convinced that the overwhelming majority of Richardson's constituents support legalized assault weapons. But Richardson said calls to his offices went 4-1 or 5-1 against his crime bill vote in 1994 and that his own polls show constituents 2-1 against the assault weapons ban ``with most of the `one' from Santa Fe.''

Still, Richardson told the Santa Fe group, ``on the vote that mattered'' the crime bill vote ``I voted with you.''

Stem cell research as part of preventive healthcare

My health care plan [focuses on] prevention. It's starting early with kids. It's getting rid of junk food in schools, as I did in New Mexico; a healthy breakfast for every child, mandatory phys ed, research into Alzheimer's, into cancer, into stem cell.

Supreme Court model cannot be justice who dissented on Roe

Q: You were asked in the debate who your model Supreme Court justice was, you said Whizzer White, who is Byron White, appointed by President Kennedy. He wrote the dissent against Roe v. Wade for abortion rights. When you were told that the next day, you said, "That couldn't have happened." But it did.
A: I checked up afterwards. White was for the right to choose, but he dissented on the opinion. When I was asked, I shouldn't have said that. I've been in public life 25 years. You're going to find a lot of these.

Q: You disagree with him on Roe v. Wade. Let's do a do-over. Who is your model Supreme Court justice?

A: I would say two: Ruth Bader Ginsberg, who wrote the dissenting opinion on the abortion issue, who I think is a distinguished scholar. Earl Warren, you know, who led a number of civil rights efforts. But, you know, I did not know that record of Whizzer White when I said that.

Q: So we're off Whizzer White now?

A: Well, yeah.

Resist any effort to weaken a woman's right to choose

I've been at the forefront with issues that affect women. I fought discriminatory wage policies in the federal government, supported legislation to help women-owned businesses, and voted to fund breast and cervical cancer screening. I have also resisted any effort to weaken a woman's right-to-choose.

Israel is less safe with Bush's policies. (Jun 2007)
Strategic interests in Russia: loose nukes & Chechnya. (Apr 2007)
Being stubborn isn't a foreign policy--diplomacy is. (Apr 2007)
Re-evaluate embargo for post-Castro Cuba. (Apr 2007)
Bad guys like Richardson; he can make peace with enemies. (Feb 2007)
When negotiating, focus on goals, not locale or format. (Nov 2005)
First to visit Aung San Suu Kyi under Burmese house arrest. (Nov 2005)
Negotiated with Castro to halve fee to emigrate from Cuba. (Nov 2005)
Clinton administration negotiated North Korea nuclear freeze. (Feb 2005)
