Amazon Launches Nuke Against Bundled Cable

Right now the studios and networks are freaking out over what could be a major loss of their profit and power base should video streaming continue to grow exponentially. If Americans are all watching streaming, you can say goodbye to network television. Better still, you can say good riddance to the un-American scam that is bundled cable; where you pay for the four channels you actually watch and subsidize another 90 you never watch and even hate (I'm looking at you MSNBC).

This is really exciting news. I dropped cable a couple of years ago and watch all my movies / tv shows by streaming. The cable companies, networks and studios are fighting this revolution, so NetFlix and Amazon (and Crackle) are producing their own content.

NetFlix Original Series in the works

* Arrested Development (new seasons)
* Orange Is The New Black (female prison comedy with "lots of shower scenes", according to the writers)
* Hemlock Grove (Horror series with Eli Roth attached staring Famke Janssen and Bill Skarsgard)
* In negotiations to acquire Reno 911

Amazon Studios

Amazon is doing something interesting. They are creating "rough draft movies". You can watch the rough draft for free and give feedback as to whither you would pay to see a theatrical version of the movie. I've watched a couple of them and they aren't bad.

Amazon is also taking submissions for new TV shows. If they produce your show idea, you get $55k and 5% of the royalties.

I love Boston Legal. I often watch costume movies.

I'm not sure what that has to do with streaming vs broadcast / cable.

I ditched my cable about two years ago as well, started with a Roku box and netfilx, determined not to pay for stuff I don't use that often. Also have a blue ray player with netflix built in. works well, but have not explored all that there is to offer. Mostly just movies with instant download feature. Thanks for the info., you seem pretty up to date on the subject and will check into some of the series you posted.

Another new show on NetFlix is Lilyhammer. It's a fish out of water story, with the fish being a former mafioso. If you like gangster movies, you should like this. Unlike the other shows I mentioned, Lilyhammer is available now.

I found myself paying $180 / month to get all the channels (and the two DVRs and cable internet) that me and the kids wanted and over 120 channels that I never once looked at. I read about Roku and ditched my cable the next month. I have no regrets.

If you like renting newer movies, Amazon VOD is great. You can add the channel to your Roku.
