EVERYDAY PHRASES FROM THE BIBLE

1. "The skin of my teeth" Job 19:20

JOB FEELS INSULTED

Job 19:

1, Then Job answered and said,
2, How long will ye vex my soul, and break me in pieces with words?
3, These ten times have ye reproached me: ye are not ashamed that ye make yourselves strange to me.
4, And be it indeed that I have erred, mine error remaineth with myself.
5, If indeed ye will magnify yourselves against me, and plead against me my reproach:
6, Know now that God hath overthrown me, and hath compassed me with his net.
7, Behold, I cry out of wrong, but I am not heard: I cry aloud, but there is no judgment.
8, He hath fenced up my way that I cannot pass, and he hath set darkness in my paths.
9, He hath stripped me of my glory, and taken the crown from my head.
10, He hath destroyed me on every side, and I am gone: and mine hope hath he removed like a tree.
11, He hath also kindled his wrath against me, and he counteth me unto him as one of his enemies.
12, His troops come together, and raise up their way against me, and encamp round about my tabernacle.
13, He hath put my brethren far from me, and mine acquaintance are verily estranged from me.
14, My kinsfolk have failed, and my familiar friends have forgotten me.
15, They that dwell in mine house, and my maids, count me for a stranger: I am an alien in their sight.
16, I called my servant, and he gave me no answer; I intreated him with my mouth.
17, My breath is strange to my wife, though I intreated for the children's sake of mine own body.
18, Yea, young children despised me; I arose, and they spake against me.
19, All my inward friends abhorred me: and they whom I loved are turned against me.

20, My bone cleaveth to my skin and to my flesh, and I am escaped with the skin of my teeth.
21, Have pity upon me, have pity upon me, O ye my friends; for the hand of God hath touched me.
22, Why do ye persecute me as God, and are not satisfied with my flesh?
23, Oh that my words were now written! oh that they were printed in a book!
24, That they were graven with an iron pen and lead in the rock for ever!
25, For I know that my redeemer liveth, and that he shall stand at the latter day upon the earth:
26, And though after my skin worms destroy this body, yet in my flesh shall I see God:
27, Whom I shall see for myself, and mine eyes shall behold, and not another; though my reins be consumed within me.
28, But ye should say, Why persecute we him, seeing the root of the matter is found in me?
29, Be ye afraid of the sword: for wrath bringeth the punishments of the sword, that ye may know there is a judgment.

We may easily bear the unjust reproaches of men if we live in expectation of the glorious appearance
of the great God, our Saviour, and that we shall be made like Him when we see Him as He is.

Job had very clear beliefs.
The brief statement here takes in redemption, assurance, second coming and resurrection.

2. "Wolf in sheep's clothing"

Matthew 7:15

"Beware of false prophets,
which come to you in sheep's clothing,
but inwardly they are ravening wolves."

15, Beware of false prophets, which come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves.
16, Ye shall know them by their fruits. Do men gather grapes of thorns, or figs of thistles?
17, Even so every good tree bringeth forth good fruit; but a corrupt tree bringeth forth evil fruit.
18, A good tree cannot bring forth evil fruit, neither can a corrupt tree bring forth good fruit.
19, Every tree that bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire.
20, Wherefore by their fruits ye shall know them.

Question:
"Should Christians judge the teachings of their leaders?"

Answer:
As Christians, we are commanded against following teachers blindly but are told rather
to “test everything; hold on to the good” (1 Thessalonians 5:21).

The Apostle Peter warns us in 2 Peter 2:1-3 that there will be false teachers in our day
just as there were false teachers in his day.

Among their false teachings is
a denial of the sufficiency of the sacrifice of Christ on the cross to take away sin,
which is a common theme among cultists today.

Another characteristic of false teachers is
the greed which motivates them in everything they do.

Paul offers a similar warning to the Ephesian elders in Acts 20:29-31, calling the false teachers “savage wolves”
who mercilessly attempt to destroy the faith of the sheep and draw them away from the Shepherd.
Paul warned the church continually, pleading with them night and day to be on their guard against such deceivers.

From these passages,
we see clearly that we are to distinguish between true and false teachers. How then are we to do that?

First, as Paul instructs the Ephesians, we are to “no longer be infants, tossed back and forth by the waves,
and blown here and there by every wind of teaching and by the cunning and craftiness of men
in their deceitful scheming” (Ephesians 4:14).

Rather,
we are to “become mature, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ”
and we do this by “the knowledge of the Son of God” (v. 13).
The knowledge of Christ can only be obtained through the Word of God, and it is by that Word that we distinguish
between the true and the false.

In Matthew 7:15-20,
Jesus offers some critical advice in discerning who is a false prophet: “Watch out for false prophets.
They come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ferocious wolves.
By their fruits you will recognize them. Do people pick grapes from thornbushes, or figs from thistles?

Likewise every good tree bears good fruit, but a bad tree bears bad fruit.
A good tree cannot bear bad fruit, and a bad tree cannot bear good fruit.
Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire.

Thus, by their fruits you will recognize them.”

Plainly stated,
is the teacher’s life marked by a progressive conformity to the likeness of Christ?
Is the teacher bearing the fruits of the Spirit? Just as only good trees produce good fruit,
so do only true teachers of Christ display the fruit of the Spirit—love, joy, peace, patience, kindness,
goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control (Galatians 5:22-23),
whereas false prophets and teachers display the acts of their sinful natures (Galatians 5:19-21).

By these fruits, we recognize true and false teachers.

Second,
does the teaching that is being presented conform to the message as proclaimed by the early church and the apostles?

As Paul writes to the church in Galatia,
“I am astonished that you are so quickly deserting the one who called you by the grace of Christ
and are turning to a different gospel which is really no gospel at all.

Evidently some people are throwing you into confusion and are trying to pervert the gospel of Christ.
But even if we or an angel from heaven should preach a gospel other than the one we preached to you,
let him be eternally condemned!

As we have already said, so now I say again:
If anybody is preaching to you a gospel other than what you accepted, let him be eternally condemned!”

These are harsh words indeed that Paul has for the false teachers,
but eternal condemnation is what they store up for themselves until the day of God’s wrath (Romans 2:5-6).

The Apostle John tells us
in his first epistle (1 John 4:1-6) how we are to discern which spirits are from God.
“Dear friends, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God,
because many false prophets have gone out into the world. This is how you can recognize the Spirit of God:

Every spirit that acknowledges that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is from God,
but every spirit that does not acknowledge Jesus is not from God.

This is the spirit of the antichrist,
which you have heard is coming and even now is already in the world.

You, dear children, are from God and have overcome them, because the one who is in you
is greater than the one who is in the world.

They are from the world
and therefore speak from the viewpoint of the world, and the world listens to them.

We are from God,
and whoever knows God listens to us; but whoever is not from God does not listen to us.
This is how we recognize the Spirit of truth and the spirit of falsehood.”

It is of utmost importance that Christians are well grounded in the Scriptures
so that they are able to discern which teachers speak from God and which are false in their proclamation.
Only then can we reject what is false and “hold on to the good” (1 Thessalonians 5:21).

3. "Salt of the earth"

Matthew 5:13

"Ye are the salt of the earth:
but if the salt have lost his savour,
wherewith shall it be salted?
it is thenceforth good for nothing,
but to be cast out,
and to be trodden under foot of men."

Ye are the salt of the earth. Salt preserves from corruption.

The disciples of Christ preserve the world from general corruption.

Whatever becomes utterly corrupted is doomed to be destroyed.

But if the salt have lost its savour. Salt is worthless if it has lost its qualities.
It preserves no longer. It is fit only to be cast out and trodden under foot.
So, too, if those who are the salt of the earth cease to communicate saving power,
they are fit only to be cast out, and Christ will cast such out of his mouth (see Rev_3:16).

4. "Holier than thou"

Isaiah 65:5

"Which say,

Stand by thyself,
come not near to me;
for I am holier than thou.

These are a smoke in my nose,
a fire that burneth all the day.

Isaiah 65:
A Rebellious People

1, I am sought of them that asked not for me; I am found of them that sought me not:
I said, Behold me, behold me, unto a nation that was not called by my name.

2, I have spread out my hands all the day unto a rebellious people, which walketh in a way that was not good,
after their own thoughts;

3, A people that provoketh me to anger continually to my face; that sacrificeth in gardens,
and burneth incense upon altars of brick;

4, Which remain among the graves, and lodge in the monuments, which eat swine's flesh,
and broth of abominable things is in their vessels;

5, Which say, Stand by thyself, come not near to me; for I am holier than thou.
These are a smoke in my nose, a fire that burneth all the day.

Yet they say to each other, ‘Don’t come too close or you will defile me! I am holier than you!’
These were rebellious people, yet somehow were also very “religious”.

Lesson

Holier than thou
As we grow in the Lord, and get older in the Lord, it’s a natural thing that more and more of our friends are Christians.

And in a sense,
it’s good that with non-Christians we have fewer and fewer relationships
where they will be a negative influence on us when we have the kinds of strong friendships that can influence us.

But we need to guard ourselves from thinking that we can’t associate with certain people because they are “beneath” us.

There has never been a person as “holy” as Jesus. Yet He had no problem getting close to “sinners”.

(Luke 5:27-32 KJV)

{27}And after these things he went forth, and saw a publican, named Levi, sitting at the receipt of custom:
and he said unto him, Follow me.

{28} And he left all, rose up, and followed him.

{29} And Levi made him a great feast in his own house:
and there was a great company of publicans and of others that sat down with them.

{30} But their scribes and Pharisees murmured against his disciples, saying,
Why do ye eat and drink with publicans and sinners?

{31} And Jesus answering said unto them, They that are whole need not a physician; but they that are sick.

{32} I came not to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.

Jesus didn’t get close to “sinners” because He needed friends or wanted others to like Him. He got close to “sinners” because they needed Him. They needed Jesus. He came to show them the way back home to God.

But look also at Levi (also known as Matthew). As soon as he took up Jesus’ invitation to be a disciple,
he threw a party for all his old buddies to introduce them to Jesus.
And Jesus didn’t turn down the invitation to be there.

Illustration

His name is Bill. He has wild hair, wears a T-shirt with holes in it, jeans and no shoes.
This was literally his wardrobe for his entire four years of college. He is brilliant.
Kind of esoteric and very, very bright. He became a Christian while attending college.
Across the street from the campus is a well-dressed, very conservative church.
They want to develop a ministry to the students, but are not sure how to go about it.
One day Bill decides to go there. He walks in with no shoes, jeans, his T-shirt, and wild hair.
The service has already started and so Bill starts down the aisle looking for a seat.
The church is completely packed and he can’t find a seat. By now people are looking a bit uncomfortable,
but no one says anything.
Bill gets closer and closer and closer to the pulpit and when he realizes there are no seats,
he just squats down right on the carpet.
(Although perfectly acceptable behavior at a college fellowship, trust me, this had never happened in this church before!)
By now the people are really uptight, and the tension in the air is thick.
About this time, the pastor realizes that from way at the back of the church,
a deacon is slowly making his way toward Bill.
Now the deacon is in his eighties, has silver-gray hair, a three-piece suit, and a pocket watch.
A godly man, very elegant, very dignified, very courtly.
He walks with a cane and as he starts walking toward this boy, everyone is saying to themselves,
“You can’t blame him for what he’s going to do.
How can you expect a man of his age and of his background to understand some college kid on the floor?”
It takes a long time for the man to reach the boy.
The church is utterly silent except for the clicking of the man’s cane.
All eyes are focused on him. You can’t even hear anyone breathing. The people are thinking,
“The pastor can’t even preach the sermon until the deacon does what he has to do.”
And now they see this elderly man drop his cane on the floor.
With great difficulty he lowers himself and sits down next to Bill and worships with him so he won’t be alone.
Everyone chokes up with emotion. When the pastor gains control he says, “What I’m about to preach,
you will never remember.
What you have just seen, you will never forget.”

Are there people God has put in your life that you need to be spending time with?
Not because you need a friend or because you want to be liked by them.
But because they need to know the Jesus you know.

EVERYDAY PHRASES FROM THE BIBLE

5. "Woe is me"

Isaiah 6:5

"Then said I, Woe is me! for I am undone;
because I am a man of unclean lips,
and I dwell in the midst of a people of unclean lips:
for mine eyes have seen the King,
the LORD of hosts."

Isaiah 6:5

He speaks this for two reasons, the one because he who was a mortal creature
and therefore had more need to glorify God than the angels, did not do it,
and the other because the nearer that man approaches to God, the more he knows his own sin and corruption.

6. "Can a leopard change his spots?"

Jeremiah 13:23,

"Can the Ethiopian change his skin,
or the leopard his spots? then may ye also do good,
that are accustomed to do evil."

--I believe this line addresses our need for God.

For His ability to give us a new spirit.--

Are we willing to turn our will over to Christ?
He can remove our spots / blemishes.

Isa_1:18, "Come now, and let us reason together, saith the LORD:
though your sins be as scarlet,
they shall be as white as snow;
though they be red like crimson,
they shall be as wool."

not having spot, or wrinkle,
or any such thing;
but that it should be holy and without blemish."

7. "A drop in a bucket"
ISAIAH 40:15

..."for all the nations of the world
are but a drop in the bucket."

Isaiah 40:
Greatness of God

1 “Comfort, comfort my people,”
says your God.
2 “Speak tenderly to Jerusalem.
Tell her that her sad days are gone
and her sins are pardoned.
Yes, the LORD has punished her twice over
for all her sins.”

3 Listen! It’s the voice of someone shouting,
“Clear the way through the wilderness
for the LORD!
Make a straight highway through the wasteland
for our God!
4 Fill in the valleys,
and level the mountains and hills.
Straighten the curves,
and smooth out the rough places.
5 Then the glory of the LORD will be revealed,
and all people will see it together.
The LORD has spoken!”

6 A voice said, “Shout!”
I asked, “What should I shout?”

“Shout that people are like the grass.
Their beauty fades as quickly
as the flowers in a field.
7 The grass withers and the flowers fade
beneath the breath of the LORD.
And so it is with people.
8 The grass withers and the flowers fade,
but the word of our God stands forever.”

9 O Zion, messenger of good news,
shout from the mountaintops!
Shout it louder, O Jerusalem.
Shout, and do not be afraid.
Tell the towns of Judah,
“Your God is coming!”
10 Yes, the Sovereign LORD is coming in power.
He will rule with a powerful arm.
See, he brings his reward with him as he comes.
11 He will feed his flock like a shepherd.
He will carry the lambs in his arms,
holding them close to his heart.
He will gently lead the mother sheep with their young.

The LORD Has No Equal

12 Who else has held the oceans in his hand?
Who has measured off the heavens with his fingers?
Who else knows the weight of the earth
or has weighed the mountains and hills on a scale?
13 Who is able to advise the Spirit of the LORD?
Who knows enough to give him advice or teach him?
14 Has the LORD ever needed anyone’s advice?
Does he need instruction about what is good?
Did someone teach him what is right
or show him the path of justice?

15 No, for all the nations of the world
are but a drop in the bucket.

They are nothing more
than dust on the scales.
He picks up the whole earth
as though it were a grain of sand.
16 All the wood in Lebanon’s forests
and all Lebanon’s animals would not be enough
to make a burnt offering worthy of our God.
17 The nations of the world are worth nothing to him.
In his eyes they count for less than nothing—
mere emptiness and froth.

18 To whom can you compare God?
What image can you find to resemble him?
19 Can he be compared to an idol formed in a mold,
overlaid with gold, and decorated with silver chains?
20 Or if people are too poor for that,
they might at least choose wood that won’t decay
and a skilled craftsman
to carve an image that won’t fall down!

21 Haven’t you heard? Don’t you understand?
Are you deaf to the words of God—
the words he gave before the world began?
Are you so ignorant?
22 God sits above the circle of the earth.
The people below seem like grasshoppers to him!
He spreads out the heavens like a curtain
and makes his tent from them.
23 He judges the great people of the world
and brings them all to nothing.
24 They hardly get started, barely taking root,
when he blows on them and they wither.
The wind carries them off like chaff.

25 “To whom will you compare me?
Who is my equal?” asks the Holy One.

26 Look up into the heavens.
Who created all the stars?
He brings them out like an army, one after another,
calling each by its name.
Because of his great power and incomparable strength,
not a single one is missing.
27 O Jacob, how can you say the LORD does not see your troubles?
O Israel, how can you say God ignores your rights?
28 Have you never heard?
Have you never understood?
The LORD is the everlasting God,
the Creator of all the earth.
He never grows weak or weary.
No one can measure the depths of his understanding.
29 He gives power to the weak
and strength to the powerless.
30 Even youths will become weak and tired,
and young men will fall in exhaustion.
31 But those who trust in the LORD will find new strength.
They will soar high on wings like eagles.
They will run and not grow weary.
They will walk and not faint.

EVERYDAY PHRASES FROM THE BIBLE

8. "Eat, drink, and be merry"
Ecclesiastes 8:15

"So I recommend having fun,
because there is nothing better
for people in this world than to eat, drink, and enjoy life.
That way they will experience some happiness
along with all the hard work God gives them under the sun."

Ecclesiastes 8

1 How wonderful to be wise,
to analyze and interpret things.
Wisdom lights up a person’s face,
softening its harshness.

Obedience to the King

2 Obey the king since you vowed to God that you would.

3 Don’t try to avoid doing your duty, and don’t stand with those who plot evil, for the king can do whatever he wants.

4 His command is backed by great power. No one can resist or question it.

5 Those who obey him will not be punished. Those who are wise will find a time and a way to do what is right,

6 for there is a time and a way for everything, even when a person is in trouble.

7 Indeed, how can people avoid what they don’t know is going to happen?

8 None of us can hold back our spirit from departing. None of us has the power to prevent the day of our death.
There is no escaping that obligation, that dark battle.
And in the face of death, wickedness will certainly not rescue the wicked.

The Wicked and the Righteous

9 I have thought deeply about all that goes on here under the sun, where people have the power to hurt each other.

10 I have seen wicked people buried with honor.
Yet they were the very ones who frequented the Temple and are now praised in the same city
where they committed their crimes! This, too, is meaningless.

11 When a crime is not punished quickly, people feel it is safe to do wrong.

12 But even though a person sins a hundred times and still lives a long time,
I know that those who fear God will be better off.

13 The wicked will not prosper, for they do not fear God.
Their days will never grow long like the evening shadows.

14 And this is not all that is meaningless in our world.
In this life, good people are often treated as though they were wicked,
and wicked people are often treated as though they were good.
This is so meaningless!

15 So I recommend having fun, because there is nothing better for people in this world than to eat,
drink, and enjoy life.
That way they will experience some happiness along with all the hard work God gives them under the sun.

16 In my search for wisdom and in my observation of people’s burdens here on earth,
I discovered that there is ceaseless activity, day and night.

17 I realized that no one can discover everything God is doing under the sun.
Not even the wisest people discover everything, no matter what they claim.

(NLT)

Matthew Henry's Concise Commentary

14-17 Faith alone can establish the heart in this mixed scene, where the righteous often suffer,
and the wicked prosper.

Solomon commended joy, and holy security of mind, arising from confidence in God,
because a man has no better thing under the sun, though a good man has much better things above the sun,
than soberly and thankfully to use the things of this life according to his rank.
He would not have us try to give a reason for what God does.

But, leaving the Lord to clear up all difficulties in his own time, we may cheerfully enjoy the comforts,
and bear up under the trials of life;
while peace of conscience and joy in the Holy Ghost will abide in us through all outward changes,
and when flesh and heart shall fail.

sweet to the soul, and health to the bones.
25, There is a way that seemeth right unto a man,
but the end thereof are the ways of death.
26, He that laboureth laboureth for himself;
for his mouth craveth it of him.
27, An ungodly man diggeth up evil:
and in his lips there is as a burning fire.
28, A froward man soweth strife:
and a whisperer separateth chief friends.
29, A violent man enticeth his neighbour,
and leadeth him into the way that is not good.
30, He shutteth his eyes to devise froward things:
moving his lips he bringeth evil to pass.
31, The hoary head is a crown of glory,
if it be found in the way of righteousness.
32, He that is slow to anger is better than the mighty;
and he that ruleth his spirit than he that taketh a city.
33, The lot is cast into the lap;
but the whole disposing thereof is of the LORD."

EVERYDAY PHRASES FROM THE BIBLE

"Give up the ghost"
Job 14:10

Job 14:
Job Speaks of the Finality of Death

1, Man that is born of a woman is of few days, and full of trouble.

2, He cometh forth like a flower, and is cut down: he fleeth also as a shadow, and continueth not.

3, And dost thou open thine eyes upon such an one, and bringest me into judgment with thee?

4, Who can bring a clean thing out of an unclean? not one.

5, Seeing his days are determined, the number of his months are with thee, thou hast appointed his bounds
that he cannot pass;

6, Turn from him, that he may rest, till he shall accomplish, as an hireling, his day.

7, For there is hope of a tree,
if it be cut down, that it will sprout again, and that the tender branch thereof will not cease.

8, Though the root thereof wax old in the earth, and the stock thereof die in the ground;

9, Yet through the scent of water it will bud, and bring forth boughs like a plant.

10, But man dieth, and wasteth away: yea, man giveth up the ghost, and where is he?

11, As the waters fail from the sea, and the flood decayeth and drieth up:

12, So man lieth down, and riseth not: till the heavens be no more, they shall not awake,
nor be raised out of their sleep.

13, O that thou wouldest hide me in the grave, that thou wouldest keep me secret, until thy wrath be past,
that thou wouldest appoint me a set time, and remember me!

14, If a man die, shall he live again? all the days of my appointed time will I wait, till my change come.

15, Thou shalt call, and I will answer thee: thou wilt have a desire to the work of thine hands.

16, For now thou numberest my steps: dost thou not watch over my sin?

17, My transgression is sealed up in a bag, and thou sewest up mine iniquity.

18, And surely the mountain falling cometh to nought, and the rock is removed out of his place.

19, The waters wear the stones: thou washest away the things which grow out of the dust of the earth;
and thou destroyest the hope of man.

20, Thou prevailest for ever against him, and he passeth: thou changest his countenance, and sendest him away.

21, His sons come to honour, and he knoweth it not; and they are brought low, but he perceiveth it not of them.

22, But his flesh upon him shall have pain, and his soul within him shall mourn.

><>.......><>.......><>.......
Matthew Henry's Concise Concordance:
Job 14

Though a tree is cut down, yet, in a moist situation, shoots come forth, and grow up as a newly planted tree.
But when man is cut off by death, he is for ever removed from his place in this world.
The life of man may fitly be compared to the waters of a land flood, which spread far, but soon dry up.

All Job's expressions here show his belief in the great doctrine of the resurrection.
Job's friends proving miserable comforters, he pleases himself with the expectation of a change.
If our sins are forgiven, and our hearts renewed to holiness, heaven will be the rest of our souls,
while our bodies are hidden in the grave from the malice of our enemies, feeling no more pain from our corruptions, or our corrections.

EVERYDAY PHRASES FROM THE BIBLE

11. "Spare the rod and spoil the child"
Proverbs 13:24

"He that spareth his rod hateth his son:
but he that loveth him chasteneth him betimes."

"I know it's not a popular topic today and most so-called experts say it's bad but the Bible seems to say otherwise. Cases of abuse are often stated, but abuse of a method does not make the method bad, just abuse of it (like prescription drugs, guns, cars, sex, etc.). So let's not try to use abuse of spanking as a case against it when done correctly, from a loving parent.

Biblical spanking, or as our Bible calls it, “chastisement,” is not beating, hitting or slapping. According to the Merriam-Webster dictionary, spanking is simply defined as: “to strike on the buttocks with the open hand
- spank noun.”

So here are the Bible verses/Scripture. Parent's, what do you think?

Proverbs 13:24
Whoever refuses to spank his son hates him, but whoever loves his son disciplines him from early on.
GOD'S WORD® Translation (©1995)

Proverbs 23:13
Don't fail to discipline your children. They won't die if you spank them.
New Living Translation (©2007)

Proverbs 23:14
Spank him yourself, and you will save his soul from hell.
GOD'S WORD® Translation (©1995)

Proverbs 19:18
Chasten (spank) thy son while there is hope, and let not thy soul spare for his crying.
King James Bible (Cambridge Ed.)

Proverbs 29:17
Discipline your son, and he will give you peace; he will bring delight to your soul.
New International Version (©1984)

Deuteronomy 8:5
Think about it: Just as a parent disciplines a child, the LORD your God disciplines you for your own good.
New Living Translation (©2007)

Proverbs 29:15
A spanking and a warning produce wisdom, but an undisciplined child disgraces his mother.
GOD'S WORD® Translation (©1995)

Proverbs 22:15
Foolishness is firmly attached to a child's heart. Spanking will remove it far from him.
GOD'S WORD® Translation (©1995)

Hebrews 12:6
The Lord disciplines everyone he loves. He severely disciplines everyone he accepts as his child."
GOD'S WORD® Translation (©1995)

Hebrews 12:8
But if you are without discipline, of which all have been made partakers, then are you illegitimate, and not children.
World English Bible

"Spanking isn't the only discipline option, says Dr. James Dobson, founder of the Christian organization
Focus on the Family
, but it remains a valuable tool. He advises
using a neutral object
such as a paddle or a switch to administer spankings to children.

His belief is that this preserves the image of a parent's hand as an object of love, not punishment.
It is crucial, he emphasizes, that parents maintain control over their tempers and always balance firmness with love."

"One of the purposes of spanking is to bring the child to the place where he respects his parents
and is sufficiently under control so he can be taught how to act kindly, mannerly and respectfully.
A great part of parental obligation is to develop wholesome character in the child...."

EVERYDAY PHRASES FROM THE BIBLE

12. "My brother's keeper"
Genesis 4:9

"And the LORD said unto Cain,
Where is Abel thy brother?
And he said, I know not:
Am I my brother's keeper?"

Genesis 4:8-15

Malice in the heart ends in murder by the hands.
Cain slew Abel, his own brother, his own mother's son, whom he ought to have loved; his younger brother,
whom he ought to have protected; a good brother, who had never done him any wrong.
What fatal effects were these of our first parents' sin, and how must their hearts have been filled with anguish!

Observe the pride, unbelief, and impenitence of Cain. He denies the crime, as if he could conceal it from God.
He tries to cover a deliberate murder with a deliberate lie. Murder is a crying sin.

Blood calls for blood, the blood of the murdered for the blood of the murderer.
Who knows the extent and weight of a Divine curse, how far it reaches, how deep it pierces?
Only in Christ are believers saved from it, and inherit the blessing. Cain was cursed from the earth.
He found his punishment there where he chose his portion, and set his heart.
Every creature is to us what God makes it, a comfort or a cross, a blessing or a curse.

The wickedness of the wicked brings a curse upon all they do, and all they have.
Cain complains not of his sin, but of his punishment.
It shows great hardness of heart to be more concerned about our sufferings than our sins.

God has wise and holy ends in prolonging the lives even of very wicked men.
It is in vain to inquire what was the mark set upon Cain.

It was doubtless known, both as a brand of infamy on Cain, and a token from God that they should not kill him.

Abel, being dead, yet speaketh.
He tells the heinous guilt of murder, and warns us to stifle the first risings of wrath,
and teaches us that persecution must be expected by the righteous. Also, that there is a future state,
and an eternal recompence to be enjoyed, through faith in Christ and his atoning sacrifice.
And he tells us the excellency of faith in the atoning sacrifice and blood of the Lamb of God.
Cain slew his brother, because his own works were evil, and his brother's righteous, 1Jo_3:12.
In consequence of the enmity put between the Seed of the woman and the seed of the serpent,
the war broke out, which has been waged ever since.
In this war we are all concerned, none are neuter; our Captain has declared,
He that is not with me is against me.

Let us decidedly, yet in meekness, support the cause of truth and righteousness against Satan.

EVERYDAY PHRASES FROM THE BIBLE

13. "Fat of the land"
Genesis 45:18

"And take your father and your households, and come unto me:
and I will give you the (e)good of the land of Egypt,
and ye shall eat the (f)fat of the land."

(e)The most plentiful ground.
(f)The main fruits and conveniences.

From Matthew Henry's Concise Commentary:

Genesis 45:16-24

"Pharaoh was kind to Joseph, and to his relations for his sake. Egypt would make up the losses of their removal.
Thus those for whom Christ intends his heavenly glory, ought not to regard the things of this world.

The best of its enjoyments are but lumber;
we cannot make sure of them while here, much less can we carry them away with us.

Let us not set our eyes or hearts upon the world; there are better things for us in that blessed land,
whither Christ, our Joseph, is gone to prepare a place.

Joseph dismissed his brethren with a seasonable caution, "See that ye fall not out by the way."
He knew they were too apt to be quarrelsome; and having forgiven them all, he lays this charge upon them,
not to upbraid one another.

This command our Lord Jesus has given to us, that we love one another, and that whatever happens,
or has happened, we fall not out.

For we are brethren, we have all one Father.

We are all guilty, and instead of quarrelling with one another, have reason to fall out with ourselves.

We are, or hope to be, forgiven of God, whom we have all offended,

and, therefore, should be ready to forgive one another.

We are "by the way, " a way through the land of Egypt,
where we have many eyes upon us, that seek advantage against us; a way that leads to the heavenly Canaan,
where we hope to be for ever in perfect peace.

EVERYDAY PHRASES FROM THE BIBLE

14. "A lamb for the slaughter"
Isaiah 53:7

"He was oppressed, and he was afflicted,
yet he opened not his mouth:
he is brought as a lamb to the slaughter,
and as a sheep before her shearers is dumb,
so he openeth not his mouth."

The whole race of mankind lies under the stain of original corruption, all gone astray from God.
God, in love sent His only begotten Son into the world, who voluntarily made Himself an offering for sin.

He submitted Himself to the disgraces and afflictions due to the worst of men, that those who should believe on Him,
might have the joy and glory due to Him as the one perfect man.

EVERYDAY PHRASES FROM THE BIBLE

15. "The blind leading the blind"
Matthew 15:14

"Let them alone:
they be blind leaders of the blind.
And if the blind lead the blind,
both shall fall into the ditch."

Matthew 15:
Tradition and Commandment

1, Then came to Jesus scribes and Pharisees,
which were of Jerusalem, saying,

2, Why do thy disciples transgress the tradition of the elders?
for they wash not their hands when they eat bread.

3, But he answered and said unto them,
Why do ye also transgress the commandment of God by your tradition?

4, For God commanded, saying, Honour thy father and mother:
and, He that curseth father or mother, let him die the death.

5, But ye say, Whosoever shall say to his father or his mother,
It is a gift, by whatsoever thou mightest be profited by me;

6, And honour not his father or his mother, he shall be free.
Thus have ye made the commandment of God of none effect by your tradition.

7, Ye hypocrites, well did Esaias prophesy of you, saying,

8, This people draweth nigh unto me with their mouth,
and honoureth me with their lips; but their heart is far from me.

9, But in vain they do worship me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men.

10, And he called the multitude, and said unto them, Hear, and understand:

11, Not that which goeth into the mouth defileth a man;
but that which cometh out of the mouth, this defileth a man.

12, Then came his disciples,
and said unto him, Knowest thou that the Pharisees were offended, after they heard this saying?

13, But he answered and said,
Every plant, which my heavenly Father hath not planted, shall be rooted up.

14, Let them alone:
they be blind leaders of the blind.
And if the blind lead the blind,
both shall fall into the ditch.

15, Then answered Peter and said unto him, Declare unto us this parable.

16, And Jesus said, Are ye also yet without understanding?

17, Do not ye yet understand,
that whatsoever entereth in at the mouth goeth into the belly,
and is cast out into the draught?

18, But those things which proceed out of the mouth come forth from the heart;
and they defile the man.

19, For out of the heart proceed evil thoughts, murders, adulteries,
fornications, thefts, false witness, blasphemies:

20, These are the things which defile a man:
but to eat with unwashen hands defileth not a man.

Matthew Henry's Concise Commentary:

Matthew 15:10-20

Christ shows that the defilement they ought to fear, was not from what entered their mouths as food,
but from what came out of their mouths, which showed the wickedness of their hearts.
Nothing will last in the soul but the regenerating graces of the Holy Spirit;
and nothing should be admitted into the church but what is from above; therefore,
whoever is offended by a plain, seasonable declaration of the truth, we should not be troubled at it.

The disciples ask to be better taught as to this matter.
Where a weak head doubts concerning any word of Christ, an upright heart
and a willing mind seek for instruction.

It is the heart that is desperately wicked, Jer_17:9, for there is no sin in word or deed,
which was not first in the heart.

They all come out of the man, and are fruits of that wickedness which is in the heart,
and is wrought there.

When Christ teaches,
he will show men the deceitfulness and wickedness of their own hearts;
he will teach them to humble themselves, and to seek to be cleansed
in the Fountain opened for sin and uncleanness.
