It's because those atoms have to move around so much and bang into other atoms. They need space and cushioning!! Yeah!! That's the ticket!! Yeah!!

You have a tiny nucleus and even tinier electrons and a HUGE amount of empty space in between. Watch "The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across the 8th Dimension", it's about that concept. He calls the empty space around atoms "the 8th dimension".
