WASHINGTON (AP) — Former Vice President Dick Cheney had a heart transplant Saturday, after five heart attacks over the past 25 years and countless medical procedures to keep him going. Cheney, 71, waited nearly two years for his new heart, the gift of an unknown donor.

No matter how much I might dislike someone, I always wish them the best.
The same applies here. I hope his universal healthcare is sufficient as there are regular Americans who don't have it and will not live through so much heart trouble. |

this is why commoners like us can get this done
so when someone important comes along they have all the bugs worked out we are human gunia pigs for the elite as they poison our foods with GMOs and demand our children take experimental vaccines its good to see them have the best possible care as we all struggle for the crumbs you know that our government elite has opted out of obamacare this is just for us |

Disagree.
Obamacare which is really congresscare was originally designed to help people get care that helps to prevent high medical costs later down the road that the tax payer has to pay. |

You can't transplant what wasn't there to begin with!
That black lump in his bulletproof vested chest wasn't a heart, it was a lump of coal he was trying to squeeze into a diamond. Wonder what child was bumped from the waiting list to make it so readily available to him....and how much it cost taxpayers? The devil wouldn't let him die! No room in hell for him! The devil hates competition! No worries Mr Blackheart Cheney! Your only prolonging the inevitable..... Your demons will get you in the end! I wish you a speed trip getting there dispite this failed opportunity! awaits you! |

Funny thing is he and all our politicians are exempt from the affordable healthcare act. Why do you think they did that? Because they can get these treatment that the average person will never have a chance to recieve even when the affordable healthcare act is fully implemented in 2014. |

My thoughts are he is to old to be on such a waiting list I have heard of many denied kidneys and livers due to their age, the guy is 71.
Just another example of the two sets of rules for the 1% and the rest of us. Were are those death panels when you need em? |

The less than 1% that "represent" us exempted themselves from the affordable healthcare act. This is just an example of them getting the best care available while the rest of us are left with the scraps. The "death panels" wouldn't make a difference in this case. |

Over 70% of heart transplants are given to people over 65, I don't hear you bit$%ing about them, it is just because it is Vice President Cheney that you say this. |

Patients who have the following conditions might not be candidates for heart transplant surgery because the procedure is less likely to be successful. Advanced age. Although there's no widely accepted upper age limit for a heart transplant, most transplant surgery is done on patients younger than 70 years old. Poor blood circulation throughout the body, including the brain. Kidney, lung, or liver diseases that can't be reversed. http://www.heart.org.in/page/heart-transplant |

Seventy-one year-old former vice president Dick Cheney is recovering after a heart transplant, his office said Saturday night.
Cheney is recovering in the intensive care unit of Inova Fairfax Hospital in Falls Church, Va., said aide Kara Ahern. Cheney does not know the donor’s identity, Ahern added, and he has been on the transplant list for more than 20 months. Cheney is known for his extensive heart problems – he suffered his fifth heart attack in 2010 – his first was at the age of 37. He also suffers from atrial fibrillation, an irregular heartbeat. “I think this was the proper treatment for him,” said Dr. Manny Alvarez, senior managing health editor at FoxNews.com. “After a very long time of chronic health problems, ultimately, his heart needed to be replaced, and this was the only way to do it.” Alvarez said Cheney’s overall strong physical health made him a good candidate for a transplant, despite his age. “The treatments he had prior to the transplant allowed him to lead a full life,” Alvarez added. He had bypass surgery in 1998 and two subsequent angioplasties. In 2001, he had a special pacemaker implanted in his chest. In 2010, he had a left ventricular assist device (LVAD) implanted for treatment of end-stage heart failure. The LVAD is a battery-operated, mechanical pump-type device that's surgically implanted to help a weakened heart sustain life. About 5 million Americans have congestive heart failure, where the heart weakens over time — often as a result of heart attacks — and cannot pump enough blood. Heart transplants are one solution, but few patients find a donor and many are too old or sick for a transplant. According to the American Heart Association (AHA) the device is sometimes called a “bridge to transplant” because it can “buy time” for the patient. “In most cases, people who have LVADS are waiting or are being considered for a heart transplant,” Dr. Nieca Goldberg, medical director of the NYU Women’s Heart Program in New York City, told FoxNews.com at the time. ”The device helps people with heart failure that have really reduced heart function due to heart muscle damage. Every time he (Cheney) had a heart attack, some amount of heart muscle was damaged,” she said. A common type of LVAD has a tube that pulls blood from the left ventricle into a pump, the AHA said on its website. The pump then sends blood into the aorta (the large blood vessel leaving the left ventricle), which helps the weakened ventricle. “The interesting thing about the LVAD is that people are really mobile,” Goldberg said. “It’s small enough so people can walk around with it.” Alvarez said he believes the future of heart medicine will be different for patients like Cheney with the revolution of stem cells. Ahern said Cheney will forever be grateful for this gift. Read more: http://www.foxnews.com/health/2012/03/24/dr-manny-despite-age-cheney-good-candidate-for-heart-transplant/#ixzz1qCTQ99M2 |
