What is depression and why do people have it?

I don't understand depression. What is it?

I was depressed, but it went away when I stopped eating gluten. So for some people, they have depression because they eat bread.

WOW THAT'S INTERESTING.

depression;
1) the angular distance of a celestial object below the horizon
2) a psychoneurotic or psychotic disorder marked especially by sadness, inactivity, difficulty in thinking and concentration, a significant increase or decrease in appetite and time spent sleeping, feelings of dejection and hopelessness, and sometimes suicidal tendencies
3) a depressed place or part : hollow
4) low
5) a period of low general economic activity marked especially by rising levels of unemployment

Wow, number 2 decribes me perfectly! xD

I didn't realise that I was depressed, but I guess that's the life I live, and that's the price I pay laugh

Real depression makes you feel like not living and you attempt suicide. For me, I have a chemical inbalance in my brain that causes severe depression. I take happy pills, they don't make you happy, just make you feel normal (and like living).

Some short term depression might be caused by lonliness, or extreme sadness over life. Other than that, I cannot tell you.

I don't know exactly but I do know what it feels like. Circumstance can make it worse for me but even without, it's been persistent in my life since I can remember. Hopelessness, dread, guilt, darkness.... it goes by many names and can be described in many ways.

I've learned to cope and shrug it off and live a somewhat normal life. I sought help after my divorce only to find that pills either make me uber sick or don't have any effect. For me, I don't think that big pharma has the answers.

Don't get me wrong though, I'm not all gloom and doom. Just a side effect from the iron age
