Some say she was framed in an alleged attempt to kill an extremist Muslim.
Daughter of Malcolm X Charged With Trying to Kill Farrakhan By DON TERRY Published: January 13, 1995 When Malcolm X was assassinated nearly 30 years ago in a Harlem ballroom, his 4 1/2-year-old daughter, Qubilah Bahiyah Shabazz, was there and watched her father die in a hail of gunfire. Yesterday, Ms. Shabazz, 34, was arrested in Minneapolis on Federal charges of trying to hire a hit man to kill her father's Muslim disciple turned bitter rival, Louis Farrakhan, minister of the Nation of Islam, and a man her mother believes was involved in Malcolm X's murder. "This is an extraordinary case," David L. Lillehaug, United States Attorney for the District of Minnesota, said yesterday in announcing the arrest and indictment of Ms. Shabazz. If convicted, Ms. Shabazz, who moved to Minneapolis from New York last September, could be sentenced to 90 years in prison and $2.25 million in fines. Her mother, Dr. Betty Shabazz, said last night that her daughter was framed, The Associated Press reported. "It is unfortunate that anyone would do that to a young woman," she said. "And it says how quick people are and how they will do anything to get their political ends." http://www.nytimes.com/1995/01/13/us/daughter-of-malcolm-x-charged-with-trying-to-kill-farrakhan.html?pagewanted=all |

It wouldn't be surprising either way. Her life was pretty messed up at that point, if you believe the accounts from her son. Given what he has said, it sounds like it might have been easy to manipulate Ms. Shabazz into saying something that could have been misconstrued. The only real question would be motive on the part of Farrakhan. How his mind works though is anybody's guess.
I'm still not sure that Malcolm Shabazz was really responsible for the fire which killed his grandmother. And even if he was, parts of his story sound as if he was attempting suicide, but never expected his grandmother to try to rescue him from the fire. That family has been all messed up since the death of Malcolm X, so anything is possible, especially since Malcolm X's wife has always maintained that Farrakhan and his cronies bragged about killing her husband. It could have been mere accusation, or it could have provided all the motive a paranoid mind may have needed. |
