2008 presidential nominee Sen. John McCain is coming around to endorsing his former rival Mitt Romney for the 2012 nomination, an announcement that the Iowa caucuses victor said Wednesday he would be "pleased" to accept.
"John McCain of course is beloved in many parts of the country, particularly New Hampshire. Some call him Mr. New Hampshire. So if, in fact, he makes an announcement today that would be big for me in a state he knows very, very well," Romney told Fox News. While Mike Huckabee won Iowa in 2008, McCain went on to win New Hampshire, South Carolina and Florida -- the next three states in the 2012 contest -- and eventually the nomination. The endorsement is also a signal by the party's one-time standard-bearer that Republicans should start falling in line behind the former Massachusetts governor.
