Contributor Network – Thu, Dec 8, 2011 COMMENTARY | GOP presidential candidate Newt Gingrich has been described as exceptionally intelligent, and according to the Huffington Post, it's one of the reasons that explains his emerging appeal. Of course, it takes intelligence to be manipulative, and to find a way to twist bad behavior in a way that benefits your own agenda. Gingrich's intelligence is not in question; it's his character. The Republican candidate is one of the worst hypocritical liars in politics, yet he's somehow one of the top picks for president? In case you don't recall, Gingrich was having an extramarital affair while he led the attack against President Bill Clinton for his infidelity with Monica Lewinsky. In 2007, he acknowledged that he had during an interview with Focus on the Family founder James Dobson, according to the Associated Press. Gingrich remarked, ''There are times that I have fallen short of my own standards. There's certainly times when I've fallen short of God's standards.'' Gingrich has been married three times, and cheated on his first two wives. It wasn't a one-time incident, and now a woman who was a campaign staffer for Newt in the late '70s said they she also had an adulterous relationship with the politician, according to the Daily Mall. This is the same man that likes to promote his so-called family values. His first two wives likely question those values, as should anyone in our nation who is considering him as a potential to lead our country. Gingrich's half-sister, Candace Gingrich-Jones, won't support him. She slammed his position on gay rights, telling MSNBC's Rachel Maddow that he is definitely on the wrong side of history when it comes to that issue. I find it hard to understand how this same man can supposedly be trying to protect the sanctity of marriage by being against same sex marriage. In September in Ford Dodge, Iowa, according to the Des Moines Register, Gingrich made the comment, "I believe that marriage is between a man and woman. It has been for all of recorded history and I think this is a temporary aberration that will dissipate. I think that it is just fundamentally goes against everything we know." So, in the eye's of Gingrich, his affairs upheld the sanctity of marriage while a loving, long-term relationship between people that happen to be of the same gender is an aberration? This GOP candidate's views are hypocritical at best, and extremely twisted at the worst. He is far out of alignment with conservatives' family values, and he has also proven to be out of touch with America in his recent speech at Council Bluffs, Iowa. In that speech, he stated that some food stamp recipients use their benefits to go to Hawaii, which is completely implausible. Politifact.com said the claim was so ridiculous they wondered if Gingrich was joking. It makes me wonder if the people who are actually backing Gingrich as their candidate are joking, but unfortunately, they are not. |
