BAY CITY, Texas — A man shot and wounded a woman and four children Wednesday at a home in Southeast Texas before apparently fatally shooting himself, police said.

Police went to a house in an eastern Bay City neighborhood about 3:15 p.m. Wednesday to find the gunman dead and the woman and children wounded, Bay City police Lt. Andrew Lewis said. The man had an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head, Lewis said.

No identities have been released.

The woman and children were taken to Matagorda Regional Hospital in Bay City, where the woman was in surgery Wednesday night, Lewis said. The children were transferred to Houston hospitals. Their conditions were unknown.

A spokeswoman at the Matagorda hospital referred all inquiries on the woman's condition to the Bay City police. A message left with Memorial Hermann Children's Hospital in Houston was not immediately returned late Wednesday.

Detectives were working to establish the relationships between the gunman, the woman and the children.

In a statement posted on its website, the Bay City Independent School District said "a terrible domestic family tragedy" had occurred at a residence near an elementary school and a junior high school. The statement assured that none of the staff or students of those schools had been injured.

Bay City is the Matagorda County seat of about 18,000 residents, 65 miles southwest of Houston.

Sure, still doesn't show you know me or what I think about this situation at all. So you assume too much for your own good.

Well good for you if you feel that rehabilitation would be the best alternative for the man.

I did not even share how I felt about him at all.
