what are you writing about??

A persuasive paper about government overreach in times of trouble through legislation like the US PATRIOT Act & the Alien and Sedition Acts, Japanese internment, etc. As of now. This may change again.

Interesting topic. Can you talk about not only the examples of, how it has harmed and benefitted, but the reason it has been done. If you think about it...the US will always try to protect itself, to continue to be a top nation?

I guess I could, but I'm being graded a bit more scrutinizingly, as this is our 3rd paper of 4. And that'd be a bit off topic. We're supposed to focus more on the persuasive part, not so much the informative.

what are u trying to persuade. several pages could devoted to the argument alone of whether executive branch emergency powers are really an over reach as the executive branch does have legal emergency powers that it can enact - so if it's legal , is it an overreach? technically?

i see. well what side can you most argue with....more government or less? look at what they've done with increasing tax on fast food in an "attempt" to get Americans to consume less junk. Or an increase in cigarette taxes to reduce the appeal.

Well, here's the thing. It started out as me writing about just the PATRIOT Act and how it either should be done away with or kept around. And then I procrastinated. And realized after a little research tonight that that was dumb. Because that's already pretty much been solved. So that's how the new topic came about. Which I haven't written anything for yet. Hence the possible skipping class. But I think I plan to write about either how it's "wrong" or "right" for the government to step in during times of trouble. Sounds legit.

I'm leaning towards less government, as of now.

I'm thinking I should get offline, go read a little (feed my brain) and get ready for bed. My schedule gets all messed up when the clocks change...

Just remember, while it helps, it doesn't have to be somethng you actually buy into or believe...just pick a topic and a side..and start writing. Do you have to reference sources?....do you have sources at this late hour for a new topic?

OK OK - but I think it is important to remember that to add credibility to your argument it is important to remember that the United States is a country governed by rule of law- so "right and wrong" aren't as salient in terms of persuasion. If it is legal the gov't/citizens can do it. (for example - we may think the KKK is wrong but if they obey the law they are entitled to freedom of assembly - the right & wrong are not salient)

Whether or not they should enact emergency power must be based on the necessity & justification as to whether there is legal cause and / or precedent...moreso than right or wrong. The gov't is not a "person" who chooses right or wrong rather it is an institution that operates based on the law. The use of the terms "right and wrong" in this context should be careful and used sparingly - looking instead at legality & justification

just a thought & good luckflowerforyou
