The leaders of Libya's National Transitional Council say they will make Islamic law, or Sharia, the "main source"of legislation, giving the country a more Islamist character than it had during the Gaddafi era. Enshrining Sharia as the basis of rule will place Libya alongside Iraq and Egypt, which ensure that no laws contradict the tenets of Islam but do notinterpret them as strictly as Saudi Arabia or Iran. The country's transitionalleader, Mustafa Abdel-Jalil, said in the ceremonymarking the liberation ofLibya that polygamy will be legalized, banks charging interest will be abolished, and women will have the right to ask for a divorce but will forgo rights to alimony—all tenets of Islamic law.

Banks charging Interest to be abolished is a good one. Many women would gladly forego alimony if granted right to divorce on demand. And of course polygamy is little different than a monogamist having extra marital affairs.

A Republican candidate for the US Senate has claimed bizarrely that two American districts are already living under it. Newt Gingrich, a former House speaker, reckons America needs a federal law to establish that sharia may not be recognised by any court. Such legislation would only be prudent, his supporters suggest, when Islamic law is trying to infiltrate every corner of American life. Elena Kagan, a new Supreme Court judge, hasbeen accused of crypto-sharia tendencies because her alma mater, Harvard Law School, has an Islamic finance project.
