Here is how I did this Caricature. I'm sure you are all dying to know. tongue2 laugh

I've decided I'm going to create a book on drawing caricatures that can be printed on demand or downloaded. Some will be painted, and some will be digital like this one.

Steps:

1. I drew a pencil sketch on paper and then scanned it.
2. Program used is Paint Shop Pro 7. A very simple inexpensive program.
3. Brought the sketch into the program.

4. Then sized and cloned parts onto the top of the sketch.

Here is a picture:

I wrote down what emotions I saw in the face to be sure to capture them. I did not want the emotion of suspicion to look like anger. All emotions can be seen in the face.

I sized the parts of the face to fit the sketch and simply cloned them over the top.

MAKING CORRECTIONS:

Last night something keep bothering me about this caricature. At a glance, it reminded me of Jimmy Walker, who himself is a caricature.

Here is Jimmy Walker:

So I took a closer look at the caricature of Dule (Gus) and realized his ears were too high.

Here is the corrected version with comparisons:

If you look back and forth at the corrections and compare it with the actual photo of Dule you will see that the likeness is a lot better just from lowering the ears.

The lower ears indicate the way he has his head cocked backwards and contributes to his over all attitude expression.

Small subtle things like this can improve the caricature towards being a good likeness.

Your drawings are very good Jeanniebean..Looks like you have a great future doing that!
When my husband and I got married we just took a weekend honeymoon (then later a trip out west)and the hotel we stayed at in Columbus is near the art school.. Students would come in and do caricatures for free just for practice.. Ours turned out really well (they were done in chalk) and I had them framed and still have them.. That was 30 yrs ago...

I did caricatures in malls and fairs before. I'm certainly not as good or as fast as I wish I were. But the people who will have one done are the nicest people.

Not many people have the courage to laugh at themselves.
