‎"The most foolish mistake we could possibly make would be to permit the conquered Eastern peoples to have arms. History teaches that all conquerors who have allowed their subject races to carry arms have prepared their own downfall by doing so." Hitler

‎"No free man shall ever be debarred the use of arms." - Thomas Jefferson

‎"To disarm the people is the most effectual way to enslave them." - George Mason 1788

Thomas Jeff quote -- I am no anti or pro, I am a linguist.

You know that double negatives are affirmations. "No man shall tread outside of Jerusalem" means "Every man must tread inside Jerusalem". (Korinthy 4:45)

So "NO free man shall ever be DEbarred the use of arms" means, because debarring is the opposite of barring, "no free man shall eve be allowed the use of arms". You see, if you read "No free man shall eve be barred the use of arms" means all free men can use arms. But "debarring" means "not to restrict by the bar", or "to allow".

So what Tommy said was "No free man shall ever be allowed the use of arms."

Either you misquoted him, or else the language changed since Jeff's times, or else Jeffy was an anti-gun guy.

But what you said he had said, the quote itself, has a meaning that I don't think you meant to say in support to your claim that, generally, it's good to allow men to have guns.

I'm pretty sure he meant that no free man will be excluded the use of, prevented from owning, or the government will forbid the right to keep and bear arms.

-------Merriam-Webster

"debar means to bar from a place or prevent from exercising a right; disbar means to expel from the bar or legal profession"

Isn't the English language great? Just like the meaning of to "depress" a button means to "push down" or 'to press'. Or as Tatoo from Fantasy Island used to say...... "Deplane, Deplane". I'm not so sure he wanted it to go away........

Who ever would have thought that I BARELY passed high school because of my English grades. HUH!

Anyway, I agree with all three of those guys (even Hitler, in THIS case). If we didn't have the right to bare arms, I have NO DOUBT that this county wouldn't still be called the United States and that Pearl Harbor or 9/11 would be NOTHING in comparison to what we'd be in for. Would any leader of a county WANT to attack a country of over 300 million people by land when they know that roughly 40% of Americans REPORT having at least one gun in their home while the majority of gun owners own more than one? I have MANY friends and family who's firearm 'collection' exceeds that of some small countries! If I was a leader of a country picking a land fight, the U.S. wouldn't be a fight I'd want! Needless to say, I'm 100000000% for the right to bare arms! I got my first gun (which I still have) when I was 12 (Marlin .35 as a B-day present from my Dad) and have had AT LEAST ONE since (rifles, shotguns and handguns). For those anti-gun people and thinking it only brings violence..... grumble grumble grumble grumble grumble The FEW people that actually do get shot out of self defense/anger/accidents/etc VERY MUCH outweigh the number of deaths that would occur if firearms were banned. A very good quote....."If guns were outlawed, only outlaws would have guns". We'd have a whole country of outlaws! The government TRIED to outlaw alcohol in 1919. That didn't work so well, did it? The right to bare arms was one of the first thoughts on our forefathers minds when they founded this country and for good reason! It's bad enough that nowadays we can't carry nail clippers on a plane or in a school (don't know why you would anyway....). If the anti-gun people take away our firearms (HIGHLY UNLIKELY....thank you NRA!) then what's next? Outlaw BB guns? Bows and arrows? Knives? Try cutting your steak with a spork!
