On this day in 1777, Button Gwinnett, Signer of the Declaration of Independence, was mortally wounded in a duel with Lachlan McIntosh. Gwinnett initiated the duel because McIntosh openly blamed Gwinnett for causing the failure of a military campaign in Florida against the British. Both men were wounded but McIntosh survived. Gwinnett died three days later.

Imagine if today politicians had the guts to still demand satisfaction the old fashioned way!
