I design & develop sites for a living, and while lots of people say "it's easy" there's so much more to it than you might think. For any given site I use between 3-5+ programming languages, then again I'm a professional & never use programs to generate my code, but if you are going to use any program I'd suggest Dreamweaver, & if you're smart you can get it for free :)

Weigh your options: Pay a professional, dedicate thousands of hours to learning how to do it the right way, or be okay with a junk site(there's no shortage of them)

Good luck :)

I'm curious. What 3-5+ programing languages to you use to make websites?

Actually my website is going to be very fancy, which is why i am having someone else do it for me. Its for one of my new business'. I think it will be worth it to just hire someone, but my nephew already offered to do it for me....so kudos to me.

I've seen lots of "fancy" websites with flash and all that "fancy" stuff that sucked. If its not functional, its no good. Go to http://websitesthatsuck.com/ and see some of the worst.

Of course you have to have good content.

Websites that suck have poor navigation, lots of stupid flash, it could download way too slow, or have a front door page where you have to click "enter" to get in, etc.

There are just a lot of pointless non functional websites out there and you can't find what you want or need on them. Some of the largest richest corporations have the worst websites I have ever seen.

Site optimization or SEO is A MUST for superior search results, but it's expensive... about 5000$. ("Organic" page placement ie:google is what your aiming for....It's Free growth!)

It is not necessary to spend a lot of money on SEO unless you have the money and not the time to learn about optimization of your site for search.

I have found that the title tags are very important, bold type and headlines with key words also.

When I first started my name, Gloria Jean, was lost in a maize of Gloria Jean's coffee websites, and also behind other Gloria Jeans out there. There other artist's and another tarot card reader by that name with higher ranking than me.

You still have to advertise to get people to your sites, no doubt about it. But once you get them there, you have to give them something or they are gone in less than 3 seconds.

If you type Gloria Jean tarot, you will find my site on page one, but probably not on the top of the page.

I certainly don't want to argue about this. My experience speaks for itself. SEO your site is an integral part of having a successful website(don't kid yourself, your competition is doing it). If you're serious about getting results and being able to earn a living online the SEO process includes all kinds of factors including tag words, quick loading of site, simple navigation, database creation, newsletter mass e-mails etc.

Everyone has their expertise.... Mine isn't websites and the learning curve has proven MORE expensive than the site optimization.

cheers

Except for the newsletters, I do all of that SEO myself. I have the time, not the money. It's a hobby of mine and I enjoyed it for a while. I haven't worked on sites for a while though.

Real successful Internet Marketers are relentless with mailing lists and newsletters and promotions and SEO etc. I just don't have the time. My business is a small one person operation and I do make money with it.

I started from scratch and from nothing and built it a little at a time. I also have to produce all the products myself. Hey its a job basically. If I sold too much I could not produce the products. laugh

I'm just a small business, but if it were not for the Internet I would not be selling anything at all.

p.s.
I do my own creative thing and I don't get all worked up about 'the competition.'

Most of my stuff is already available on other websites that promote my products personally, what I want is my own website to host to help me track my own sales more efficiently and launch more products within my own site instead of searching out other sites that are product specific. They are also available in stores for purchase, but a lot of people are shopping online these days...I just want to set up something i can be more in control of.
