Not one leftist on this site bothered to post anything about Providence Democratic Mayor Angel Tavares sending out termination notices to almost 2000 unionized teachers.

Why would a Democrat do such a thing?

I thought you all were for the working man?

I am sure he could have raised taxes to cover the cost of keeping all those democrat donors on the job and their union chieftains rolling in the dues..

Interesting... I'm sure that budgetary concerns couldn't possibly be the issue.. It has to be UNION BUSTING...

So let's go leftists.. Into the streets... You can't allow the Koch brothers to organize another clamp down on the working man..

Outrage, anxiety after Providence mayor 'fires' almost 2,000 teachers

Termination notices have been sent to every teacher in the Providence public school system, setting off a wave of anxiety and anger in the Rhode Island city and prompting a union leader to accuse the mayor of anti-union maneuvering.

The teachers will remain at work as the school year continues, though the notices sent out this week mean any of them now could lose their jobs at municipal officials' discretion. During a packed and at-times spirited meeting Thursday night, the city school committee voted 4-3 to back Mayor Angel Taveras' move to send out the notices.

The mayor said in an online message Wednesday that he authorized the previous day's decision to dismiss almost 2,000 teachers and staff to allow for greater flexibility as the budget process unfolds. Taveras said officials will later determine the final number of layoffs -- as well as exactly which teachers in which schools might lose their jobs -- needed to balance a multimillion-dollar budget gap.

"It gives us more flexibility to recall teachers based on student need," said Christina O'Reilly, a spokeswoman for the district.

That explanation did little to assuage teachers in the firing line, nor did a closed-door forum Thursday with Superintendent Tom Brady on the matter.

Teachers said that their union wasn't notified beforehand of the termination notices. At Thursday's meeting, they said they were given general assurances that the situation could be resolved within the next month.

Taveras insisted that he values Providence's "gifted teachers" and only felt compelled to act given a March 1 deadline to notify municipal employees about "potential changes to their employment status."

But Steve Smith, president of the city's teacher's union, said he believed the decision "makes no sense at all to teachers or the community." He accused Taveras of "making a political decision to take control and silence workers" -- a group that, he said, has consistently and continually worked with city leaders to implement reforms.

"It's shocking that in the midst of working in a collaborative environment ... the mayor says you're fired," Smith told reporters

Calm yourself, calm yourself. Hyperventilating can be bad for you.

This is the first I've heard about it. Good eye.

I don't know anything about Angel Tavera. There are a lot of Blue Dog Democrats around. Maybe that's it. I've also hard that the Mafia has a strong hand in Rhode Island politics. Maybe that's involved.

The DNC is nobody's friend. They want to turn a blind eye to illegal immigration so their businesses have access to cheap exploitable labor, NOT humanitarianism. The GOP Pushes for enforcement but the DNC fights that tooth and nail, why? They have financial interests like the GOP. The sickest thing is they play both sides of the argument and no one wants to call them on it. Those of us who do call them are called racist bastards!

America should be for Americans first! America does not belong to the world. America tries to keep its house clean but people come from other countries and trash it! Hell, back in the 90's a Japanese business interest bought the rights to operate the Sequoia National Park and promptly tried to start logging operations in it but were stopped by a host of injunctions and violence perpetrated against the loggers who by the way were mostly illegal immigrants since most AMERICAN loggers know better than to log in a wilderness preserve. Japan and China had STRIPPED Madagascar of its forests and denuded the islands completely. That would happen to us if we let them. Asian Economics is based on consumption. You consume a resource completely and move on to the next one! At least here we have conservation. But back to the point at hand.

The GOP is the lesser of two evils. The DNC lies WAY too much, engages in too much illegal activity, and likewise has set themselves above the rest of us. They do not listen to Americans, they listen to their polls and lobbyists. It is Rome's Imperial age all over again! These Unions should be offering concessions to keep their jobs instead of shoving demands down our throats. They would not offer to take pay cuts to save their jobs. Well, suck it down you Union bitchhez! The days of Union power are numbered! Sad to think Unions became their own worst enemy! If destroying the power of Unions is what it takes to get industry back here well, guess what, 20% of the population who is Unionized vs. the 80% who is the rest of us, guess who has superior numbers!

The sad thing is Unions lost sight of what they were supposed to do! They became Guild Masters, not laborer defenders!

Yep mob is definately involved... with the Unions.

such poppycock...

they had to send out the notices because they must lay off some and UNION rules require them to notify anyone that has to be layed off within a certian period of time...

but they do not yet know exactally who they will lay off... because the Unions tried to 'delay' the process past the point of notification.

so they covered the Union requirement by simply notifying all of the teachers.

You're not telling the whole story. Not one teacher has been terminated yet, nor will all 2000 BE terminated in the future. I think the city has an agreement with the union to provide advance notification of employment cuts and can't pick and choose to whom to send the notifications.

This is entirely different from the Koch affair, where the rank and file AGREED to cuts, whereas Walker, arguably at the Koch's bequest, is saying "No retreat, no surrender". He's drawing a line in the sand with no compromise possible. They have to either knuckle under or else. Fiat by ultimatum-- the favorite mode of tin horn dictators everywhere.

BTW, I'm not generally fond of unions, but the pendulum HAS swung in the other direction. I think people like the Brothers Koch need to be reined in before they cause too much damage.

KerryO,

The bill does not eliminate collective bargining. It 'modifies' collective bargaining to allow for bargaining on wages but not on 'benefits' (which cost the government much more than wages).

That puts a lie to the propaganda that the bill takes away collective bargaining.

It does not effect the PRIVATE sector unions... That puts a lie to the propaganda that the bill effects such organizations. (i.e the AFL/CIO claiming it 'strips' all unions of rights).

These little propaganda wars are destroying our country...

(and before any one can start labeling me a righty... I have as many examples of THEIR propaganda also)

I don't know what sources you've been reading (well, actually, I can guess). Every propaganda source I've seen has made it clear that the bill seeks to eliminate collective bargaining right for everything except wages.

Ain't that what I said... Oh, you sound bited me... Darn that is irratitating...

The LIE being used is that Union propaganda cleverly eliminates the part about wages... Instead stating simply that it takes away from the collective 'rights' as though it gets rid of them all...

People being what they are this ignites anger... because of a lack of truth. (omission is a lie).

Not yet-- but as Judge Judy might say, "Don't pee on my leg and tell me it's raining." I think it's blindingly OBVIOUS that the Koch brothers would love to see all unions busted for equally OBVIOUS selfish reasons.

Given the money that those brothers can 'weild'...

The appearent lack of 'Tea Party' presence in this affair puts a lie to them being the 'backing' of the tea parties... (if they had been backing this there would have been a much greater presense).

Visable groups with a name do not allways represent that actual group...

Just look at some of the organization which include 'democratic' in their titles yet upon examination hold NO democratic 'ideals'...

Or the countries that include 'democratic' or 'republic' in the title of government and yet practice something not even close to either...
