Topic: My Mom and the "Cat" | |
---|---|
My mother has become very aware that there are many homeless animals these days and decided to put dog food, cat food, and water on her front porch to help feed these hungry little varmints. The other morning, just before dawn, she took her dogs out to potty. While waiting for them to finish their business, she decided to sit on her porch swing. As she sat down, she caught a glimpse of white fur under the swing. After sitting, she bent over to see if she could persuade the kitty to come to her and said "Come here, Sweety...it's okay"....and as she looked under the swing...was face to face with a opossum!!!!! She said all she could do was stand up slowly, call for the pups and back into the front door

They live out in the country, and my grandma feeds the stray cats, and has geese and ducks and dogs, so there's all kinds of food out there. As I was cleaning, I heard something crawling around in the rafters but couldn't see it. I assumed it was a cat, so just kept cleaning. I get to the back corner of the garage and the animal jumps down onto a work table. It was a raccoon. I quickly backed away as to not corner it or make it feel threatened. |

I was mowing grass at this one house where the grass was like knee high. I ran over a gardner snake. When I was down south I almost stepped on a couple rattlers.

I would like to have a pet snake, but I think they would be too hard to care for properly.

I don't have any, and will probably never have one, I just think they're cool. I kinda feel bad for them. LOL

When my kids were in grade school and we lived in the country, I caught a garter snake and put it in a jar.. the kids took it to school for show and tell.. the teacher was not a happy camper.. While living in AZ my brother would catch rattle snakes and skin them to make hat bands...YEA, we grew up in the country.. always had raccoons for pets too... |

Black snakes, while not poisonous, can get a bit aggressive. Even a snake lover would be right to back off from a 6 footer. Good thing about the black snakes is they are pretty good at keeping the other, more dangerous snakes away.
Gotta watch those garter snakes though. Harmless little buggers, but if you scare them they can give off this musk that is worse the skunk spray...next to impossible to wash off too. Personally, I like corn snakes. Pretty little things, and quite harmless. Speaking of wild critters showing up in unexpected places, when I was in High School my grandfather would put feed out on this platform feeder for the doves. We were pretty used to the squirrels stealing it, but one day we looked out and saw something else entirely. We had a giant rood rat (he was bigger then the squirrels) sitting on the feeder, stuffing his face. At my folk's old place, we had a mama ground hog and her baby living in the brush pile. |
