I think the original poster is hanging around the wrong people. There were groups of shiftless, lazy, society-leeching individuals in every generation. It really comes down to your parents, though. I was raised that nothing is free in this life, and if you want something you have to work for it. So I worked and paid for everything of mine, my 1st car, my guitar, even my college education. My best friend even had to start paying rent to his parents after he turned 16! Some kids are given everything they ask for and don't really appreciate the need to actually work or show discipline/determination.

I mean, its hard to find, but you find the right people, and you're good. I mean, I'm 18, I don't drink, smoke, or snort, an I have just as much fun as everyone else, if not more
