WASHINGTON (AP) -- The ledger did not appear to be adding up Tuesday night when President Barack Obama urged more spending on one hand and a spending freeze on the other.

Obama spoke ambitiously of putting money into roads, research, education, efficient cars, high-speed rail and other initiatives in his State of the Union speech. He pointed to the transportation and construction projects of the last two years and proposed "we redouble these efforts." He coupled this with a call to "freeze annual domestic spending for the next five years."


If he redoubles the efforts does that mean we'll have 18% unemployment?


You could tell he was spinning a yarn on where the money will go in a few places there, last night. Not just on high speed rail.

He continues to flog the lie about the CBO report meaning you'll lose money by repealing Obamacare.

He talks about cutting money to big oil, but as I understand it that money went to research and development. That's probably a good idea though, because there doesn't seem to be new oil development allowed in, or offshore of America anyway.

But the bigger thing is if you're cutting oil subsidies, where are the much bigger, and even more reasonable cuts you could make to biofuel subsidies?

Also big oil is doing a lot of R & D on green energy, so they'll most likely find a way to lose the money they spent looking for oil, but they'll just give the green energy arm a different name, and get money for that.

It will be more shuffling than cuts. And the cuts to big oil would just be a drop in the bucket anyway.

Why were they singled out for a mention?

Because they made a profit. Any profitable business would be seen as a target under this logic.
