Should a person who is not allowed to have a relationship like a Catholic Priest give marriage and relationship advice????

Personally I feel NOT! How can a person who is not involved with anyone understand dealing with marriage and relationship issues?

They CAN'T and any advice they give is based on the advice of others or the church and we all know where they stand!

In the Church, a Priest will offer refer couples to a licensed therapist. The priest of my last parish said he drew from his own family experiences, and formal training in counseling that priests receive.

long & short of it - 2 things

1. ANYBODY can give advice about anything - it's a free country

second I'd rather have the advice of someone with training & objectivity than an associate or friend without professional training any day of the week - our friends (though perhaps married, AND always well meaning) often see things through a bias or agenda of their own

You'd be surprised where good advice can come from. Never dismiss anyone...they may hold the answer to your most burning questions.

I think that a lot of catholics would believe they should be able to as their marriage is based on their faith and what they feel God would want and who better to give advice than one that studies the word of God...

I think it's fine if the person is ok with that...

I tried it when I was having marriage problems (I'm a Lutheran), I felt that the Pastor talked more about herself than trying to help us with the issues but I'm sure that was an isolated incident with that Pastor...

The difference is that pastors in a Lutheran Church can get married. Catholic Priests cannot. Likewise comparing a priest to a Pastor is apples and oranges. You are comparing a Bishop to a monk/ friar. Even then they are likewise supposed to be celibate.
