Topic: Is Opera only a Christain thing? | |

Aida? -- It's set in Egypt and there are numerous references to Egyptian deities like Isis and Osiris. Definitely not a Christian storyline, although it was written by Verdi.

Verdi is Italian but wrote about the outside world, Egypt, Sweden, ect. He is one of Italy's best.

Opera has more singing in it than talking. Musicals have more talking with singing bursting out intermittently. Fiddle on the Roof is considered a musical.

Opera came out of the Western European tradition.
The Western European culture has always been centered around Christianity (if not explicitly, then implicitly). But Opera itself isn't instrinsically Christian. It just happened to come out of a Christian culture. |

Historically, opera was popularized at the time of the inquisition, some believe that it was to divert public attention from the bloodshed of the time...
...and technically it's a Roman invention but I'd say it can be enjoyed by anyone today. |
