The holidays last year and this year are a little difficult because my mom died recently. At this time of year I can't stop thinking about her. We weren't even really that close but she loved Christmas and went out of her way every year to prepare a fabulous holiday. I still almost accidentally buy her gifts when I'm out shopping - I will see things and think gosh that 's perfect for mom...

any like experiences? anyone special who is not around any more that you think about at this time of year?

Haven't dealt with it yet, but I know it's coming. My mother died this past August, on my birthday of all days.

oh gosh - that's awful. ya, my mom died last august (09) so just as I had pretty well put it behind me...I really started to miss her when holiday time rolled around. That first year, I actually did get a gift for her...gave it to my sisterslaphead

we lost someone important to us days before christmas, but instead of getting sad about it, use it as a time to remember the years past and what joy that person brought at the holidays. They only die once, but they were around for years and years bringing joy around the holidays and I am sure those are the memories they would want you to remember during this time.

Alright all you damned grinches...Holidays are for celebrating. got the whole rest of the year to hate. Lest we forget, it is a time to put a real smile on your face and be REALLY f***ing thankful that heathens like us had the good fortune to have some truly wonderful souls dance into and out of our lives. Smile for the dance you had. Don't cry cause the song ended.

God has truly forsaken our species when I am the one who has to be the optimist.......

thanks krupa, I think a lot of us really needed that!! that's also kinda how I feel about men - can u get me one of those for christmaslaugh ????pitchfork

My grandfather passed on Dec 23 so I always think of him ...

And my mom was in the final weeks of hospice at Christmas last year ... I'm thinking of her alot ... I miss her ...

I understand - I kept pretty busy & tried not to think a whole lot - but it was the little things...like buying her present, and baking the cookies she always made

sometimes it really hits home
these twinges we feel
more sharply
like a shot
a concentrated reminder
of the deeper and constant
feelings we experience
with those who are apart of us
every day

good point slowhand - really I do spend my time focusing on my kids who I spend every holiday with - we are carrying on my family's traditions

BTW I knew this thread might be a downer, so I appreciate the upbeat thoughts from some of you also, thanx

The Christmas day can't be the same without all the family.
I lost my mom since 8 years (i was 15) and every years i miss her for all important dates.

Sometimes the life isn't easy but i think we have to try to be happy for them because i believe they all looking at us.

I believe something similar. Part of the reason I do what I do at this time of year is to remember and to pass on memories & family traditions to my kids

My only problem is with Christmas music. It wears me out hearing the same song over and over. Unless it's the Chipmunks or something cool like that.....smokin

I have a REAL problem with seeing Christmas decorations & hearing Christmas music in stores before hallo-friggin-weengrumble

Manheim Steamroller (I think)

Dude, when they play that song on the radio...we crank it up and every guy in earshot is banging thier heads like its a Megadeth show.

Manheim Steamroller saved Christmas music for me!!!

C.Brown Xmas Tree & Bernstein Bears music should do the trick.
laugh  flowerforyou

OOOO I love a Charlie Brown Christmas! I love the music from that show - the tune where the cast is dancing instead of listening ( kinda reminds me of where I work)laugh

Sorry for your loss, it always makes this time of year a little harder.

Its amazing how the death of one person can change a holiday. When my grandmother (dads side) was alive there would always be about 15 different pies laid out, she was a hillbilly so they were all from scratch too. Cherry, Pumpkin, Apple, Coconut cream, Chocolate, Rhubarb, Pecan etc. When she died all that died with her. She was the one who kept my dads side together for everything, we would always split holidays between my mom and dads sides and when she died my dads side kinda went their own way and now its predominately my moms side we do everything with. My grandpa died on Dec 21st 1993 and that first Christmas without was pretty strange.

I agree. My family has gone through some big changes in the last decade or so - it does affect the holidays so I try to find ways to keep traditions we had as best as I can & add new ones that are just ours (me & my boys).

I'm the pie maker in my family. I don't really do that any more - I keep it pretty simple now. But that's part of what I mean. I used to spend about a week cooking Thanksgiving dinner, and baked over 100 dozen Christmas cookies e. year
