Welcome to Los Angeles. I'm in the Southbay myself. You will find people here with hints of varying degrees of what you are looking for but you are among the Bulls China Shops fear! (You have heard the phrase "Like a Bull in a China Shop" have you not???)

Americans in general are not very humble. All I can say is just do not lower your standards but do not expect a lot here. People in Los Angeles can be very superficial. I know, I lived here most of my life so far. Sounds like you are attending Santa Monica College. It is a surprisingly good school. Parking is a headache though. I attended it for a couple of years. Great school to transfer from too!

One other thing if you have not found out about this either, everyone knows about Disneyland. BUT There is Six Flags Magic Mountain in Valencia which is about 45 minuets if traffic is good north of Los Angeles. Once you do that park Disneyland will look like it is ALL kiddie rides. I recommend having a friend hold on to your shoes while you do the Batman ride. It eats shoes, hats, anything not strapped down to your person. Do the front row especially! Good place to take a date too but then again so is Disneyland.
