Deoxygenated blood is NEVER blue/purple. It only looks blue because of the way your skin refracts lower wavelengths of light. It is in fact red, just a darker, brick red compared to oxygenated blood. If you put on blue tinted glasses would white paper turn blue? No, it just looks that way. Same with your skin on top of your veins. When you give a blood sample, it is blood from the veins, deoxygenated blood. There is not enough surface area in the vial to fully oxygenate the blood in the time it takes you to give the sample.
