My pretty little butterfly,
As the rain poured from the sky
I watched from my shelter
As you fluttered from flower to flower
Seeking a place to stay dry.
Yet no flora could save your fragile wings
From the destruction that threatened
To extinguish your tender life.
Into that watery torment I stepped,
And I gently cupped you with my hands.
I held you close to my chest and used my back
To guard you from the howling wind.
I watched in silence as my body’s warmth
Enabled you to dry your tiny frame.
I blew my warm breath over you
So that your tattered body could heal.
I gave you nectar to quench your thirst.
I watched to see if you would revive.
To my astonishing eyes
You began to grow and grow and grow
Until I could no longer hold you.
The rain stopped. Sunbeams lit your path
As you flew from my hands.
I smiled with delight as you circled around me
Enjoying your new life.
You landed on my shoulder and sang to me
Before you flew away in your new form.
My heart served as your cocoon,
Giving you new metamorphosis.
Now in the sunshine you fly
With a song in your heart.
You are no longer a little butterfly.
I gave you my love,
And now you are a dove.
