I've known both men and women with body image issues, but I'd say the women were more self-critical and self-demanding about it than the men.

By that, I mean I have known many women who considered themselves "fat" because they were 10 or 15 pounds heavier than they wanted to be. The men I've known seemed to have to be at least 50 pounds over before they had any awareness of it.

but to the Op's point, yes I think women obssess over it more. women are also more critical of other women. I already know where I am in the size dept., and don't really care. I think some of us tend to obssess a little less about it as we get older (speaking of being over the hill)

men will comment on a male bud being overweight regarding concern for his friend's health (heart, cholesterol, etc) But women will say things in a more critical, personal level - like personal attacks, either overt or in disguise
