While Westlake's campaign for the Republican nomination is fueled mostly by small donations, "Johnson has poured his personal wealth into the race and pledged to pour millions more into his bid against the three-term incumbent Democrat."

Early polls indicate that, if Johnson wins the Republican nomination, he and Feingold would be in a tight campaign. A Rasmussen poll from July showed Feingold with 46% and Johnson with 45%. A Public Policy poll from late June showed Feingold ahead of Johnson by only two points, 45% to 43%, or within the margin of error.

Congressional Quarterly on July 23, 2010 stated that Johnson had "surged" in the polls since entering the race in May 2010 and that Sen. Feingold now "has a fight on his hands."

On July 14, The Club for Growth, a conservative organization, endorsed Johnson in his Senate campaign.

This makes me very happy! The Senate will be a much better place without Reid and Feingold.
