Butter? when I lived in Mississippi the preachers always said "Our Lard Jesus" and "Jesus is lard!"

I'm an athiest but I have researched and studied theology for years. When my son was little I allowed him to accompany his best friend to a non-denominational christian church. I thought it would be better to allow him to witness for himself, so that later he could decide for himself what he would choose to belive.

This went on for about two years. When he was 7 and a pretty reader, he burst through the door, one Sunday, extemely excited and yelling "mom, mom, guess what?"

"Did you know that God is a living being?"

I said yes.

he said, "Mom, a living being."

I said YES, I understand.

He looked confused and he got real serious and said

"Mom, a l i v i ng b e i n g." very slowly.


I said Y E S. What did you think he was.

He got a little red in the face and then laughed.

"All this time I thought God was a giant lima bean in the sky. And I just couln't understand why everyone was beliving all this stuff."

What could I say - I simply said "Well I know he is supposed to be a 'living being' and I STILL don't understand why everyone is believing all that stuff."

He went away obviously deep in thought and the next Sunday chose not to go the church, and never went again.

I suppose at his 'impressionable age' he would have bought the idea of God being a lima bean, but being disillutioned and feeling mislead was another matter. Perhaps he couln't reconcile all those beliefs to anything other than a 'lima bean'. ??
