mabe its time to revisit an old favorite topic. Whats you fav hobby/
interest? my hobbys are restoring all things old, and i collect minerals. im restoring an 1862 hearse right now, no ine has ever seen on like this. it is smaller, and has a sleigh gbody for the winter and a carriage frame for the summer. i believe it is the only one like it in existance. been working on it for a few months now, and i have the carriage frame and the sleigh body done. Am working on the fills now. ( the part that the horse connects to.) this one has both types, for one and two horses. havent started on the hearse body itself yet though i do have all the wood planed and ready. usually i can be found restoring old water pumps , but they are on hold till i finish this project. |

Ram, that's too cool. Are you the one who collects and restores the
water pumps too? No main hobby at the moment, except for pool/billiards. I love to do miniatures. I do quilling, I make elaborate things out of rolled or scrolled up paper, like doll house furniture, or fixtures, several music boxes and miniature shadow box type wall hangings, and room settings for display, all out of paper. |

... as for my mineral collection, i have a bunch of Trinitite, which was
sand fused into glass from the first atomic explosion in 1945 in New mexico. Yes its radioactive, but very mildly so, less than a granite countertop actually. i have some fairly large pieces, one is 42 grams. Also, i have some asbestiforms, or asbestos bearing rocks. yah thier safe to handle, only after processing into asbestos is there a danger. i have some flourescent/radioactives, and some other minerals such as the lead ores. i call it my toxic mineral collection. they are very interesting, some are quite beautiful actually with thier crystal structures, and quite safe to handle if you take proper precautions. i keep all my toxic minerals in glass jars to contain any dust, and if i handle them i do so on newspaper, which i can discard afterwards. all my radioactives i store in a concrete/lead container in a locked shed away from any houses. this is overkill actually because all the minerals are just slightly radioactive, all are less than an older coleman lantern mantle, which are actually quite hot i was suprised to find. i have some very old geiger counters which i can use to test the minerals as well as my containment vessel. ther are a lot of myths about radioactivity, some believe that you can become contaminated by exposure to radiation and actually become radioactive. this is in fact true only if you ingest the item, not just by being near it. the readings drop off fast as you get farther away from the mineral, with no readings at all as close as one foot from the source. these are of course just very mildly radioactive. |

rambill... I have to use a radioactive soil compaction testing gauge at
times that has 2 pieces of radioactive material inside it. We have to go to school to learn how to safely handle it and we wear monitoring badges when we are near it to keep track of the amount of REMS that we are recieving. Once we recieve the maximum amount we can no longer work with or be near that machine. I am not around it much so I don't glow in the dark.!! |
