THEY LOVE CHEESE!!!

Actually, not really. They will eat it, but I've seen many a mouse, or rat turn their nose up for something better. Besides, it's actually not all that healthy for them.

When I go to the pet store to pick up food for this wildebeest I call a dog. I always want to buy one of the little white feeder mice. Just to save it from getting gulped by a snake.

Oh and just as FYI to everyone. Never put a sign up that reads "Free Kittens". People will get them to feed to their snakes..very true.

I took my daughters to the pet store one day and my younger one, in her stroller, looked up at a tank pointing with a big smile....

"Mommy, look!!! Mousey jump!! Jump mousey!!!"bigsmile

Then the snake sprang up and gulped the poor little guy......

"Mommy? Mousey gone!!!!!"shocked shocked scared sad sad sad sad

Am considering getting a snake too. So if the mice don't behave it's cheaper for me to feed it, ha ha! pitchfork

Free anything will either get them fed to the snakes or used a bait for training fighting dogs. Never do freebies, unless you go through legitimate rescues (and verify! There are some serious crooks out there, not to mention hoarders!).

Bet that upset your daughter, Eileen. I had something similar with a Whippet I had and a rabbit. Absolutely horrified me, though eventually I wrapped my head around it.

On the other hand, a pet store I went into had a gorgeous 6ft long python that no one was sure would make it. Apparently, someone put a rat in it's pen, when the snake wasn't truly hungry and the rat ripped it up one side and down the other. Poor snake!

Just make sure Caithlin isn't around when you feed him.... She is 17 now and still remembers it.

Snakes are truly fun to have around. But a lot of pet stores obtain them thru the cheapest means possible and they aren't always the most agreeable specimens. May I suggest you find a Reptile Expo in your area and talk to the actual breeders to learn about the different species and the line a particular snake you'd consider purchasing came from. The more generations removed from the wild the better for a first pet. Set up can be expensive, but don't skimp out on a secure cage and especially the heating elements and proper lighting. Some require high humidity and may also need a misting machine. Do your homework, Reptile Magazine always has the latest info.

Well turns out I don't have two males, I have a male and a female as I discovered last night when there were two new arrivals. Unfortunately one of them appears to have died and as I can't see the body anywhere I'm going to assume that the mother either ate it or moved it.

The mother or father probably ate it/cleaned it up. Be prepared, though. They can pretty much breed and birth back to back, so you may have to keep them separate if you don't want any more.
