Report: Israel concerned over Saudi-US defense deal

Maan News Agency

Bethlehem - Ma'an/Agencies - Israel is trying to thwart a significant defense deal between the US and Saudi Arabia, which includes the purchase of new F15 fighter jets and upgrades to the Saudi air force, according to Israeli media on Sunday.

According to a senior defense force source, the US is interested in developing the Saudi air force to deter Iran, the Israeli daily Haaretz reported. However, Israel wants Saudi Arabia to receive fewer upgrades because "[t]oday these planes are against Iran, tomorrow they might turn against us," the source said.

Israel expressed a number of reservations over the deal to the US, with Israeli premier Benjamin Netanyahu expected to discuss the issue during his Washington visit on Tuesday.

Israeli's military superiority has been high on the US agenda for the past 18-months, according to the daily, with the two sides agreeing that neither would surprise the other by agreeing a military deal with a third party.

A senior source in the Obama administration reportedly told the daily the US has promised Israel it would have priority access to any new weapons system and, in some cases, exclusive rights to buy new weapons systems, as opposed to Arab states.

"The administration is conducting open and completely transparent talks with Israel on the matter, and we are updating Israel on any planned deal to hear its reservations," the official said. "We believe that there are many cases in which the Iranian threat commits us to strengthen the ability of states in the region to defend themselves."

The US-Saudi defense deal has been raised several times over the past two weeks by Israeli officials, according to the report, including Israeli Defense Minister Ehud Barak during a meeting with US Defense Secretary Robert Gates and National Security adviser General Jim Jones, as well as during a Tel Aviv meeting between Israeli defense officials and a US delegation led by Undersecretary of Defense for Policy Michele Flournoy.

In June, British media reported that Saudi Arabia gave Israel an aerial passageway to attack Iranian nuclear sites, which was later denied by both Israeli and Saudi officials.

debkafile’s intelligence sources disclosed Monday

debkafiles is known to make up stuff and "predict". They are basically just a "wet dream" but nothing else.

Wired.com's Noah Shachtman wrote in 2001 that the site "clearly reports with a point of view; the site is unabashedly in the hawkish camp of Israeli politics," adding that Debka had partnered with the right-wing news site WorldNetDaily for a weekly subscription product.[3] Yediot Achronot investigative reporter Ronen Bergman states that the site relies on information from sources with an agenda, such as neo-conservative elements of the US Republican Party, "whose worldview is that the situation is bad and is only going to get worse," and that Israeli intelligence officials do not consider even 10 percent of the site's content to be reliable.[1]

Oh and by the way if I had the whole world after me, and I were a coward I would get out the rumor that I were dead to and make it look as credible as hell.

How do I know Bin Laden is a coward? Simple he lets EVERYONE else do his dirty work for him. If he really believed what he preaches he would strap as much explosives on him as humanly possible and turn himself into the closest American Troops he could find or let himself be captured and blow up as many soldiers as he could. Hes a ****ing coward.

So he's a coward because he did what the CIA paid him to do and now gets to laugh at imperialist Americans? laugh

Actually, he was. Elite media have lied about it of course, but that's their job. (just as they lie to justify every stupid war) He was useful to the US regime in their "war" against the Soviets. It was not till he turned on the imperialist hand that fed him that the US deemed him a "threat".

i agree with you, the US has meddled in more things than any of us know about...the government is made up of thousands of individuals and each has their agenda, some good, most bad... the people voted these individuals into office, we have to accept that. i don't like it anymore than anyone else, but what is in the past, has past. we have to deal with what is now, and what brought us to now is a mute point. the government has screwed a lot of nations over with false promises, dealings and outright lies, but right now, for our sakes and our childrens sakes we have to deal with these past mistakes now. if you know of a better way, please feel free to say it, because just apologizing and hoping they don't blow us off the earth won't work.

I don't know how much clearer I can be! The history of militas and private defense goes back 220+ years in this country alone. Before that, there was precedent in Britain. There is no true need for standing armies or foreign wars except for war profiteering/nation building. If there ever was one, it would be a brand new phenomena in history.

As I said before, the situation calls for either a declaration of war or letters of marque and reprisal. Why not call your congress-critter and have him support Ron Paul in his motion for this?

Occupation and eternal war will never work and never has worked in the history of mankind. This is especially true in Afghanistan-the Graveyard of Empires.
