It's a USB wireless adapter that I am attempting to connect with. Do I need to disable the other modem that I am plugged into now? Not necessarily. Is the wireless adapter trying to connect to the same router you are running the wired net? for the usb drive/pci card unplug it & plug back in or reseat, make sure ur close enough to the access point(modem) it can't return an IP address if it can't connect ******************************************************************************* On a wireless connection you must have a usb card that plugs into an external usb port, or pci antenna that snaps into a slot inside ur tower with an antenna sticking out of the back of ur machine (which I have it's worth a few extra bucks for a desktop set up cuz it's a more stable connection than an external card, but the card is good if u r mobile), you need driver software, and a service or access point to a wireless signal that is broadcasting, and a modem to transmit that signal to ur antenna or card. On a server and /or network, the modem is handled by server administration and often not much u can do there but contact them by phone. When your computer network connection full map displays (windows -or gnome) a connection from your machine to ur router but no connection from the router to www, then the modem needs reset. Also make sure you have set up (configured) a network SSID to identify ur connection & connection type. (or have selected an available open connection) If it displays no connection from the computer to ur antenna then reseat ur device and reinstall drivers if u have to (like for example, ur machine has been down or you removed the hardware and replaced (reseated) it. A couple times reinstalling drivers has worked for me - run a software update in device manager to update drivers also. In device mgr -u can also check the hardware status of your device OR u r too far from the signal and ur card isnt picking it up. I have a card at work and the thing needs to unplugged and plugged back in almost everyday. Needless to say I like my antenna on my home system but u would be amazed how often these problems can be fixed by just resetting the connection by unplugging and re-plugging in stuff |
