Why, thank you. It's a character study and a cautionary tale; it's a singular view of a type. It's one of hundreds of character studies of men and women I'm working on, what Sherwood Anderson called "grotesques."

It's easy to put anybody down for what they say, which is why the topics on these forums are so often tepid. Everybody here seems to have become afraid of being a target, so they lurk on the sidelines, throwing spitballs, as if that's some indication of their intelligence and wit.

Why thank you. So freedom of expression is still a part of American freedoms or, at least, one person still thinks so. Thanks again.

I don't get the controversy. The writing starts out:

Old women who were predators on men in their youth,...

So why would anyone become offended by anything that follows this?

It seems to me that the only people who could become offended by it would indeed be old women were were predators on men in their youth.

If they weren't predators on men in their youth, then clearly it isn't referring to them.

So I'm at a loss to understand why anyone would be upset by this writing.

Because it is the furthest thing from anything remotely creative, it does not belong here, the fact that it is here is even more disappointing than the fact that it exists in the first place.

Now, excuse me while I stab the hell out of this thread hoping it dies...

Well, don't look at me. Wulfenstraat kicked it up. I just responded whilst it was still at the top of the page. bigsmile

Fear,

If you want this thread to SINK, don't post to it.

Instead, run down the page posting a smiley face to every other piece of poetry on the page. That will SINK this one over onto the second page. bigsmile

Well, I thought it was creative, well written, and interesting to read. I wasn't offended. I think maybe you were trying to show the consequences of choosing such a life.
What's missing, I'd say, is the compassion for the old woman who is now probably really unhappy and facing death alone. There is no mention of the remorse this elderly woman may feel, or the lack of understanding, or love, or fears that may have contributed to her making destructive choices. You only speak of her mistakes, but it's hard to see her humanity. Was this character all bad? Showing the other sides of her personality may lend to believability.
I volunteer in a nursing home and it's hard not to feel compassion for the elderly people, even the "not nice" ones(who usually soften if you show you care)...but then, they haven't hurt me...can't speak for those they may have wounded; the ones who won't come to visit.
keep writing.

OPINIONS...like something else, we all have them.

Can't agree with this one,

Don't even think it is a good comparison....my opinion.

Thanks. Open minds seem rare on this site, and your suggestions are valid. Like Abra said, this poem is addressed to old women who were predators on men which I assumed would be 1% of the gender, yet most women took objection, as if most women, thinly disguised as loving women, are actually predators on men. It gave me a start at how many seemingly normal women were 'disguised' predators on men, simply because they saw this poem as an attack on them personally.

Or, it may just be that I was correct in my assumption that this sort of woman is only 1% of the population but that women who are predators on men are over-represented on this forum.
