Seems Hollywood is turning to old scripts, and rewriting them. I know that Horror films especially have seen there fair share of re-makes. Anyways, so in your opinion, what have been the best remakes made lately. I will throw out the first one....

DAWN OF THE DEAD (2004): Back in 2004, none of us knew who Zack Snyder was. We would all learn his name well after the mega success of 300 (2007) and the flop that is Watchmen (It is a good movie. Just didn't make the money that many felt it would). Anyways, Snyder got the green light to re-do Dawn of the Dead, and boy did he ever deliver. I love the casting, especially when you have Ving Rhames, Jake Webber, Sarah Polley and Mikhi Pfifer. But the story really does drive this movie, and we really get a good sense of each of the main characters and (surprisngly) the non essential characters are good too. The actors really do drive this film. The zombies don't, and nor does the gore. Even the funny moments flow well with the film. It makes the story more real, especially since the characters are stuck in a mall, just trying to survive. Overall, this is better (to me) than the original, but I am sure most would disagree with that. Still, in this era of remakes, this is one that stands out as awesome.

they made a remake several yrs back but it was only on fri nite and it was only on for a couple weeks it ended really weird.... i think the old show was better.
my sisters and i would come running home to try and watch the end and mom what was happening on the show

Love Dawn Of The Dead(2004), I actually bought it like a week ago and still can`t get enough of it, plus the special features are just as entertaining as the movie.

I do have to disagree that the remake of Dawn is better, the remake I really liked more than I thought I would, but it doesn't even come close to touching Romero's original. I am glad they chose to not make a carbon copy remake and changed the story.

I'll add the new Star Trek movie- a reboot to the story, but still stayed faithful to the the originals. Everybody fit their roles well- especially Zachary Quinto as Spock, and Karl Urban as Bones...they made a really good scifi movie and didn't try to turn it into a joke like the Starsky and Hutch movie.

funny you mention that
i got a copy of the new star trek for my birthday last month, and was quite impressed.....
as i am a fan of the original, and the next generation series,i kinda thought this would be a travesty of trek-ism.

instead,i found a really good movie.
kinda wondering what they will do next.

Well Torgo, I figured you would disagree with me on this.laugh laugh But hey, I see your point, and while I do love the original, there was just something about the remake that made me love it more. I too was glad that Snyder did change things, and what he did worked.

I love J.J. Abrams version of Star Trek. OMW....that movie blew me away with how good it was.

Does it have to be horror?
Cause I just wanted to say that I liked the Death Race with Jason Statham better than Death Race 2000. drool

I did like the new Death Race, but still not better than the original...the remake was lacking one thing- Running Over Pedestrians!, that's what makes the original so fun, that and the crazy cars and the characters...but I still enjoyed the new one like I said, and there is a prequel on the way.
There was also the really really bad straight-to-DVD "Deathracers" with Insane Clown Posse in the cast.

I'll admit when I first heard of the remake of Dawn, I wasn't going to watch it. But then USA Network aired the first 10 minutes uncut before the film was released, so I decided to watch it- I was hooked. That ranks as one of the best beginnings to a horror film ever.

I'm not saying these are the best remakes, but I did enjoy:

My Bloody Valentine 3D- Especially seeing it on the big screen in 3D. It was a very entertaining slasher flick.

Friday The 13th- A lot of people said this ruined the franchise...no, the franchise was ruined with part 8, Jason Goes To Hell, and Jason X. I was glad to see Jason back in the woods where he belonged.

The Tool Box Murders- This movie really only shares the title with the original from '78, the screenwriters themselves said they never even watched the one from 1978.

The Texas Chainsaw Massacre '03- Better than I thought it would be. Though technically it's not even the first remake as parts III and Return Of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre remade the original.

Well, you brought up the remade Friday the 13th (wow, we are on a horror kick in this thread, lol) so I will throw in my two cents. I honestly felt the series had died after part 4, which was supposed to be the ending of it all. I mean, they took Jason to Manhattan and outer space in later editions, so to say that this remake had any negative effect on the series is really dumb.

I liked the remake because Jason actually chased his victims, and he had to resort to little traps and spy tactics to get a leg up on them. And I loved how we saw him pick up the machette that actually killed his mother. And hey, you gotta love the one dudes line about the chicks breasts. It's so funny how he says it during sex. Had everyone in the theatre rolling. laugh

I guess considering that most of the remakes coming out are horror it's kind of hard not to:tongue:

I actually liked Part 5...after that the series became a joke and it felt like they were more poking fun at the franchise than anything.

And I agree with what you liked about the remake. It is funny though that many people I've seen complain about all the changes the Friday the 13th remake made to the originals, yet no one complained about the changes Dawn made to its original.

Off horror- there's a rumor of a new Planet of the Apes reboot that will start from the origin of how the Apes came to be, and it will of course be 3D.

I was having a lot of fun with the Friday the 13th remake until the end. Wow, that was a horrible, horrible ending.

But, ummmm.....BEST remakes? I can list off dozens of crappy ones, lol. A lot of them would be horror, too. That genre is being mined for everything it's got at the moment.

The Departed is an excellent remake, though. If you've ever heard of an Australian horror movie called Long Weekend, well, that one got remade as Nature's Grave, and Jim Caviezel was in it. It was better than the original, but that's not saying too much, really. There are probably more good remakes, but I'll end with two of the worst (both horror): Nightmare on Elm Street: Talk about pointless; and The Uninvited: a very apt title, indeed.

I wouldn't say the remake is a better movie. The original is one of my all time favorite Aussie films- basically the remake is just the same film even written again by the guy who wrote the original. This is a pointless remake, as it added nothing new.

I didn't think the '05 remake of Assault On Precinct 13 was too bad.
