This makes me laugh, and all these years of being disappointed thinking that others know these things and being surprised when their actions seem to indicate otherwise.

Yes, exactly. The higher the level of technical mastery, the more willing you are to say things like . . . hmm maybe, because given any situation you realize how many variables are truly involved, and through previous problem solving exercises you realize how easy it is to be wrong.
