Topic: Anyone know if I can paint over a wall border | |
---|---|
My son wants the border in his room black...I have no problem with him and a Bl&Wh bedroom. I just don't want the hassel of removing and redoing a border or even sanding & primming. Does anyone know what kind of paint would decently cover a border?? He prefers a matallic look. I thought of textile, or even art paints. We just want to slap it up there and have it look decent ( teenage boy gamer room)...lol Any ideas???

There is a base paint/sealer called Kilz. You can put almost anything over it.
You might want to check into that. |

It's not one step, I've had GREAT success with it.
If you're looking for one step, I can't think of anything. |

My girlfriend suggested that you might be able to buy a border that your son likes.

Kilz is great! Never had any issues with it.
As far as the border goes, it depends on what kind of shape it's in. If its already peeling or bubbling or the edges are starting to curl, it would be better to take it off. If it's in good shape, then painting shouldn't be to big of a deal. Another border over the top, you'd be better to pull the old stuff. Wet, and fresh glue from the new border may cause the older stuff to soften and loosen up, and then you'd lose both. Have fun! Just redid the bathroom, and put up paintable wallpaper. Love that stuff. Still have to finish the kitchen, but basically, this year involves painting the outside of the house. |

You CAN paint over the existing border. That being said, it's only a matter of time before the glue that holds the border to the wall begins to dry out and the paper border starts to peel off. At that point, the paint isn't strong enough to keep it from curling and peeling, and it's gonna pop right thru that coat of paint. It's not fun (and I hate fooling with wallpaper), but it's easier to take the paper border off, clean the surface, prime, and then paint. The long way home is the shortest way there sometimes ...

The moisture from painting the border can & most likely cause it to peel. Most borders aren't that hard to take off. Usually just a little hot soapy water & a scraper. I was married to a carpenter for 21 years & he would never put another border over top of an existing one or paint one for that reason. If I were going to try painting it I'd tape newspaper above & below to protect the walls form overspray & use a fast drying spray paint. But, then you have to have an even hand with your spraying. Plus if you don't spray even it'll run or leave light & dark splotches. You could cover that up by painting black & then once dried doing a mist with silver or gold. I love decorating!!!!
