Well that sounds very promising and interesting...
But can you spare some salacious details? I mean the prurient interest must be served! OK - what made it the best!? |

My high school boyfriend had just signed a
contract to play for the St. Louis Cardinals. He had to fly from California to St. Louis for a signing bonus and banquet. Problem was, it was the night of our Senior Prom. !!!!!!!!!!!! I was sitting home feeling sorry for myself. The phone rang, it was him. He had showed up for the banquet, put in an appearance and hopped the next flight home... could I be ready to go to the Prom when he got there, late. Oh, yeah :-) Best night ever. He died shortly after, so the poingnancy remains. |

What was your best date? Did it really happen? My best date ever was Oct 27th 2001 but actually I am outlining the best THREE dates - ever - with the same person. I was casually dating a guy who was 21 at the time (I was 35). We met at a hiking club the summer of 2001. He is American but he and his family live between California and Italy because his mom is an international attorney. He was extremely educated and cultured with a funky streak. He had longer hair, wore black nail polish and looks very similar to Johnny Depp. He appealed to me on all of those levels! (I had to mention that ). He worked in Italy as an English teacher. Aside from hiking, this was our first official date. We went for cocktails first. As we chatted and hung out, he was writing in a little journal. His writing was not distracting or inconsiderate to the situation. He shared some of the stories he wrote, including the one he was writing as we talked. Being with someone as talented and intelligent as he just gave me butterflies! Not to mention, he spoke Italian quite often and that made me just melt! After drinks, we went to a Thai restaurant. He spoke a little Taiwanese and he just continued to bowl me over (he speaks 4 languages). If a person didn’t know he was 21 – no one would ever have guessed. He knew how to properly order for me, he is exceedingly polite, knowledgeable, and wasn’t a big hairy ape in a restaurant. The next part was a surprise. He took me to a screening of La Dolce Vita at an amazing historical theatre!!!! The Crest Theatre is a landmark anyway but seeing an Italian black and white subtitle film there just added more charm than I could take! Since he spoke Italian, he supplemented parts of the movie. It was crazy romantic!!! I honestly felt like I was in a dream. After the screening we walked around downtown, held hands, and talked (simple and silly but perfect). We stopped at a dessert diner then went for cocktails again and I made it home by 3am. Oh, everything was within 4 or 5 blocks so we walked all night until we drove home. It was just a perfect night! Our next date was Halloween. We dressed up in “Scream” costumes at my house, handed out candy to the kids, watched scary movies, order in Chinese, and made margaritas! Again, simple but perfect. The next week he came to my house, took me grocery shopping, and then he made me the most amazing authentic Italian dinner. His recipe was in Italian, and handwritten from someone in Italy. I think he said his mother’s business partner wrote if out for him. He brought a bottle of Chianti he purchased in Italy. It was so fun to cook, and watch movies. He also gave me Italian lessons as we cooked!! A practice they use in Italy when pouring wine is to use a strip of linen to "tie" around the bottle to keep the wine from dripping on the table. He used a paper towel, and tied a bow at the neck of the bottle. I still have that bottle. For a brief moment, my house WAS in Italy! He left for Italy the next month and we have kept in touch all these years. He’s lived in New Zealand, Australia, and Ireland. About a year ago he moved back to California, to Santa Cruz, to help a friend with his surfing business, and he just let me know he is moving back to Sacramento (to care for their house) for a year before he leaves for Italy again!!! I am so excited. Yeah, 9 years has past and I don’t expect the same romance or connection. We have, however, kept in touch with picture and stories; therefore, I know we have a strong friendship. Thanks for the topic. Recalling my brief romance made my day! I have not met anyone like him nor have I not been on a date that topped any of the time I spent with him. In our lifetime there is always one person we meet that is like no other, and I am sure he is THAT person. So cool ... |

These were lovely reminiscences and I really enjoyed reading them! I think it will be fun to hear of some of the dating anti-disasters for a change! |
