I have an Apple iMac and a PC laptop. I love my iMac but sometimes you need something a little more portable. (and I'm THAT kind of geek that feels the need to have 2 computers)

I got a fairly inexpensive Lenovo ThinkPad and I have it running on Windows 7. I work in the IT industry and this computer works just fine for an average user. bigsmile

I like mine a lot.. they aren't really marketed for consumers (more business class) but there are inexpensive models.

Personally I like Toshiba, Sony, and Alienware. You can also go the Mac route as well if that is your preference.

Windows is fine, but stay away from Linux unless you're very computer savvy. Linux is a great OS for people who want to learn more about Linux, otherwise just stay away from it.

Getting an extended warranty is up to you but some of them cover it even if you run over the thing, so check to see what the coverage is and if you want to spend the extra cash.
