How many times have you heard requests for pictures from places like The Weather Channel, CNN, FOX, your local TV station, local newspaper photo contests, etc ... ? Sounds good, doesn't it? They'll show your picture on TV and put your name up there where everybody can see it and ... and ...

Ever notice they NEVER say anything about PAYING YOU for YOUR COPYRIGHTED IMAGE? Folks, they're getting FREE CONTENT from your images. You're giving them content to fill their air time or the pages in their publication and, if you read the rules (usually available on their site), in a lot of cases (CoastToCoastAM's rules are a good example), you pretty much agree to give 'em your Copyright and allow them to use YOUR images any way they want in perpetuity - including LEASING the rights to use YOUR images to other users for ... you guessed it ... MONEY.

Now, if you just wanna have a 'warm fuzzy feel-good' experience, by all means continue to send in those pictures - but realize that y' can't walk up to the man at the deli and tell him you're gonna pay for that rib-eye steak with the 'photo credit' you got from those nice people at the TV station or the newspaper ... think about it ...

I don't see the big deal... If you want to sell the pics ask for money, when they say know you realize they don't really care if they have them or not... If you want the warm fuzzy you give them for free and realize you have a day job to pay for that steak from the meat counter...

They do the same thing if you sell it to them as well, the only difference is that they purchase it from you...even then, the money you are getting is hardly worth getting bent out of shape for.

Trust me, if you sell it to them you are getting screwed over a lot more.

I wonder why this bothers a person so much? Alot of people probaly would just love the simple thrill of their 15 minutes of fame, as Andy Warhol said. Unless it was lewd or unscrupulous advertising, I don't really see the problem. Thats just who I am.
