flowerforyou I would think if a child isn't receiving lunch on a regular bases the school would contact the parent to discuss the situation and resolve itflowerforyou

You would think and hope so...when I called the school and asked why they wouldn't let my boy charge his lunches when his punches were used up, I was told they stopped the "charge" program because they weren't getting payed by enough of the parents after the fact. So in this case the school was not concerned if the kids were eating or not...it came down to $$$$$, not the kids!

Yes, school districts have to be concerned about their budgets, I want them to be concerned. Similar problems at my kids school too, many parents not paying off the charges kills it for the occasional forgetful student.

Eating is a basic skill mastered at a fairly early age, we start eating the day we are born, and stop just before death. I think the parent was trying to do the right thing. I have let my child receive a lower grade because they left their homework at home and wanted me to bring it in, this is after a few trips to bring forgotten home work before.

The other issue is a the number of children who don't have the resources at home to provide for lunch either brought from home or to purchase from the school. This is why the subsidized lunch program started. Yes, kids do better in school when nutritional needs are met. The question is does society need to provide it or is it strictly the parents role? If it's society's role, what is the best why to deliver it? More food in the home, or food at the school? Actually we do both in this country.

I think the intent of the parent was for the child to learn from the experience, and I think it's the parents role to make sure they are providing the child with their lunches. I've always bought my boys their lunches and it does add up..if there are programs for those who can't afford it the parents need to utilize them. But what about the kids whose parents don't step up? What about those kids, does society have a responsibility to them. 1. The parent isn't concerned about their kid getting lunch, that's a problem right there. 2.) The kid is not doing as well in school because of not eating. There are two strikes.
When my boy was sharing his lunch punches, I didn't know the family, I didn't know the situation. What about a kid like that? Those are the ones who slip through the cracks. Maybe society does have some responsibility for kids like him. But I didn't know what to do, so I let my boy share..I payed for many of his lunches. He's just one boy.

Beat the kid with a broom, lock him up in the closet and make him take the short bus to school. That'll cure him!laugh laugh

Everyone has their own way of dealing with things, of course. However, if the parent is always taking up the slack for their kids forgetfulness, then the kid never learns. At what point does one step back and say "you are on your own" ? My folks let me go without eating, or with a lower grade, if I forgot lunch or homework. Even with mom being home, she didn't always have a car, so if we forgot it, we were s.o.l. They taught us to have everything ready the night before, at the front door, ready to walk out, and mom made lunches for us, the night before, so all we had to do was snag it out of the fridge before going.

There are plenty of parents who are excusing their children for abuse, animal torture, theft, alchohol, and killing someone. If they had started with personal responsibility at a young age for the easy things, and followed through, it might not have escalated to this point.

Granted, the vast majority of kids don't go that far to the extreme, but it's a pretty easy thing to see where it starts.
