just watched a really good interview on CNN with Farid Zacariah, whom I like very much as a non partisan type journalist. Do they really have to be foreign born to be non partisan?

he was interviewing Paul Volker, the head of the Fed under Carter and Reagan

Volker says we have morphed in the last 20 years from a manufacturing society to a consumer society

all our manufacturing has gone overseas and all we do now is import and consume. and that is not a partisan thing. it is an american people thing. He says we cant manufacture because we are lazy

all our brightest and most capable graduates all go to wall street. if you look at all our mechanical engineers and chemical engineers, tney are all chinese and Indian

right now it costs less to import a ton of steel than it does to manufacture a ton of steel in America. That is because of regulation and taxes. We have the second highest corporate taxes in the industrial world

the question is not whose fault is it (those commie democrats or those corrupt republicans) Volker thinks the biggest danger facing America is this stalemate gridlock between Dems and Repubs. so that nothing ever gets done. It seems that both parties would rather see this country collapse and blame it on the other party than to actually do something to advance America

the question is what to do. Can this be reversed and restore America as a economic superpower. Or are we just doomed to feed on ourselves and allow China or India to take over as the dominiant culture on the planet?

hahahahaha and as indicative of that very problem

since there is no "republicans suck" or "democrats suck" angle to it

no one has anything to say

THAT is our problem

It was once said "The sun never sets on the British Empire"-- but it did when, after WWII, the 'brain drain' finished it's cycle and saw the English cede their technical expertise to Yankee ingenuity.

It was then said that the 1900's were 'The American Century'. Now, I'd say the sun is setting on The American Empire because of a similar 'brain drain', in which innovation and ingenuity has been replaced by cronyism and financial chicanery. Instead of LCD display technology and manufacturing know-how, we gave the world CDOs and Credit Default Swaps.

Our last engineering intern told me that he was only one of 3 American citizens in his class, that everyone else was there on scholarships given them by their foreign governments. Scream "SOCIALISM" all you want as loudly was you want, but be prepared to watch the world turn a deaf ear as the 'brain drain' in this country gets nothing but worse while Bread and Circuses aid and abet it.

Well the danger is real but we have hardly ceded all our manufacturing capability to foreign competitors. It is not the 19th century. The world is as small as a mouse click and lowest cost workers can be employed by U.S. concerns readily and profitably.

It would be better to characterized the shift towards a service economy but our large military industrial complex and diverse multinational subsidiaries make this situation somewhat unique.

It is very true that we have to reign in debt big time and find
ways to retain our advantages in technology, education, finance,
software and automation. There are many including many current
politicians who appreciate this.

Considering this is one man's opinion. That is a consideration.

I do agree that the battle between the two parties is hindering, not constructive by a long shot.

Obama has really tried to be bipartisan. Too much so, I say, He had some good ideas and should have ran with them while he had the majority and momentum. Most presidents lose approval during their first year so he is normal on that note but the momentum seems to be waning which is sad.

Bringing more manufacturing here has been on the table recently here because I remember hearing about it. I don't remember what happened with it though. I would have to look it up and I don't feel like it right now,

It's because we are not allowed to compete when we are young. Everyone has to win so the losers don't feel bad.

Yes. If there is an infection of 2 different sicknesses, you might want to get someone who isn't infected by neither of them to get an accurate answer of not which one is worse, but why are both destructive and how to treat it.

Of course, I'm talking about the left-right paradigm. It's even more apparent in the American news media.

It's impossible to get an unbiased view of happening anymore in USA. I have a hard time finding any news that isn't leaning either left or right. Especially in the TV. There is virtually none. You better off listening to Al-Jazeera or some no-name news network talking about news in USA.
That's why I check it, but I remain skeptical, especially if I there is a suspicion of partisanship from the author.

Well, some days you eat the bear, other days the bear eats you. Those having a 'winner-take-all' philosophy often see everything in the terms of zero sum games and often, in business, get their 'nads handed to them when they come up against a well-constructed kieretsu.

I spent a good chunk of my professional life in an ad-hoc kieretsu and made out quite well. The one thing against which one always competes is a change in the paradigm, and knowing as early and as often as possible when your business plan is going to stop working because of changes beyond yours and your competition's control is of far more worry than having competition.

Often, when the Big Players get involved, they turn the field into a sea of red ink by trying to run the competition out of business. Read: Microsoft X-Box & Sony Playstation. IIRC, Nintendo is a LOT smaller player, albeit the most profitable one.

As an employer I found U.S. citizen to be more than qualified to do any job asked of them. I tried the illegals but they weren't worth much. They can't speak our language, and they steal a lot from you. But I didn't take long to find that the saving you have in wages is lost in other ways. I only hire our people and well never try any other group again.
I really don't understand why a U.S . citizen would speak so poorly of us . I bet your a liberal ......

As long as there is greed, this situation will be here and only get worse.

My ex's brother worked at a fuse factory in a small town in Mexico (American company) and got paid $4 per day for the work he did. It was recently closed and moved to China because the labor was cheaper there. Everyone was laid off and is now out of a job.

I'm one of those coveted independent voters

a little liberal here and a little conservative there

I believe in a womans choice (a terrible choice but its hers) BUT I dont believe in Roe v Wade. Because I dont believe the Federal Government has the authority to either condone or prohibit abortion. Its a state's prerogative

I believe in decriminalization of marijuana

I would like to see universal healthcare

I don't approve of same sex marriage but I have no problem with civil unions granting all the same rights and privileges

I don't believe in progressive taxation

I vehemently oppose gun control

I dont believe in private campaign funding. it should be 100% government financing. That would take out the monopoly of goverment by the rich elite

I believe government is the problem not the solutioin

You do realize if the Federal Gov't overthrows Roe Vs. Wade, the state of Texas, and other states already have a law set to go into effect banning the choice of an abortion, right?

They aren't leaving it up to the public to decide, because the general population, while they may not like it, would leave it up to the woman. They are just plain taking the choice away.
